Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

I'll give him that he's not as bad as he could be. Not like his sister, anyway.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersI think those powers are inherently pretty creepy for anyone, to be fair. My point was that most people with that kind of power would fall far short of Professor X's relatively responsible use of his powers, but even he can be pretty intrusive and manipulative when he wants to be, even at his best. And how can you ever really be sure he's *not* controlling you on some level? It's a huge temptation even for someone who starts out as being a relatively decent person.
Telepathy is always an interesting power (and one of my favourites in fiction). The connotation of "pheromones" is a kind of mind-influence that's specifically related to inducing physical attraction, which I find uniquely creepy as a power. Any telepathy can be misused, but the specific power to make people be attracted to you (unrelated to other telepathic powers like mind-reading, jedi mind trick, etc., which have obvious combat-related applications) pretty much can't be used in a non-creepy manner, except to spice up your already-consensual love life if you have one.

Lets put her in the shame corner with Starfox
On second thought, separate corners.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersAre we all forgetting that the Purple Man literally has a daughter whose gone by the name Persuasion and the Purple Woman
?
That reminded me of something always came to mind in discussions of Starfox and the Purple Man.
One thing I find amusing and potentially disturbing is how in Mistborn, a male character with the power to soothe emotions, providing a Compelling Voice like effect ends up pairing off with a female character with the equal/opposite power of inflaming emotions. Just as in-universe, the character avoided close relationships because he couldn't avoid temptations to use his powers, I get a sense that out-of-universe, the author considered it too rapey for either of them to be in a relationship with anyone else.
"You killed my father!"
"Your father was a piece of shit who would have used you like he used everyone else."
My various fanfics.Isn't the idea behind pheromones that everyone is emitting them all the time, and characters with pheromone powers just emit more potent ones than everyone else? If those powers are a creepy violation of people's free will, then aren't all face-to-face interactions a creepy violation of free will, too?
Assuming human pheromones exist, that is, which hasn't been conclusively proven.
Only if the pheromones in question are so strong that the other person cannot resist. How much control you have your pheromones exactly is tricky, but if you're compelling people to obey your every whim against their conscious desires, I think consent's pretty clearly out the window.

As far as I know Kilgrave's daughter isn't a even villain in the comics - except when written by the occasional writer who thinks In the Blood is an edgy and cool reason to rewrite her as evil.
The MCU is no stranger to adapting heroes as villains, but it'd bug me if they adapted her as a bad guy just for a revenge plot - it's a poor reason to waste such an interesting character concept. Especially since she's associated with Alpha Flight - the more I learn about those guys, the more I really want them to show up in the MCU (beyond the Easter Eggs we've already got).

According to That Other Wiki, currently all but one is Canadian. The non-Canadian is a space alien.
One of them even wears a maple leaf symbol.

Was just about to say, isn't Professor X kind of an asshole?
Have you any dreams you'd like to sell?
