Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

I feel like not making Sue into a hard scientist runs into the Unfortunate Implications of women not being able to succeed in those fields. Besides, I like the idea that a love of the sciences could be something Sue and Reed share, actually share— make it into a character beat, where she's one of the few people who can keep up with Reed on any level, and thus the one who can keep him somewhat tethered to this reality. The one who can funnel his blue-skying stream-of-consciousness into something more practical, maybe.
If Sue isn't quite the supergenius that Reed Richards is, being pretty much the smartest person on Earth-616 is pretty much Reed's whole deal. Sue makes up for it by virtue of having one of the strongest, most versatile powersets, once she realizes it. I'd like to see them highlight that, and I don't mean just with fight scenes. The Four are explorers and builders, and powerful telekinesis and mental constructs can do a lot more than just letting her fly around squishing bad guys.
To me, turning her into a scientist is what creates Unfortunate Implications first place, because than you run always in the problem that no matter how good she is, Reed is always the smarter one, thus suggesting that woman can be in science but they always need some guy who hold their hand...exactly the same trap they fell into with Jane, and she was even allowed to be at least theoretically the smarter one (and she still needed Doctor Selvig to back her up). I rather have her being one of the best in a field which has little to do with what Reed does, and being one of the best in it. Especially since it would show that science isn't the end to all things. Also, remember Doctor Jackson? He was portrayed as an exceptionally smart guy even though he WASN'T the technical expert of the team.
There's implications either way. If they wanted to have Sue be entirely Reed's equal in intelligence and scientific prowess, I wouldn't mind that at all, for instance. They could further link it to their powers, too— Reed is curious, flexible, and creative, but maybe Sue's the one with the laser focus and and impeccable, diamond-hard scientific rigour? Science can be beautifully collaborative, and that'd be nice to see. I feel like if any team should be all about the wonders of science, it's the Fantastic Four.
I don't mind Sue having other fields of expertise outside of hard science that Reed lacks (and vice versa), but I'm hesitant to remove her science background entirely.
Sue as an anthropologist would be cool
I never thought of that before
Forever liveblogging the AvengersIf the MCU ever gets the FF rights, the obvious way to introduce them is to replace the U.S. vs. U.S.S.R. space race from their original origin with an Earth vs. Aliens space race, i.e. getting humanity's spacefaring abilities up-to-snuff before the next alien invasion happens, so that Earth can play offense as well as defense.
The villains could then be the Skrulls, whose scouting ship crashed at Roswell in 1947, destroying their ship's engines and killing the members of their crew who would know how to rebuild it. With no way to get home, they've spent the last 70 years using their shapeshifting abilities to infiltrate various government and scientific organizations to push forward technologies that might lead to faster-than-light travel, so that they can leave Earth, contact the Skrull Empire, and tell them about this new planet that's ripe for invasion. The Four would naturally be the first humans to get a faster-than-light drive working, causing their transformations and getting them involved with the Skrull plot.
A thought. I'm not one to do MCU versus DCU comparisons, and to the extent I do I'm typically on the MCU side.
However, I saw the pictures of Mera from the Aquaman movie
and I think that's basically what Medusa of the Inhumans should look like- just with slightly longer hair and less... uh... wet.
The DCEU side does have some pretty great costumes. They might be lit a little darkly for my taste, but even then, the saturated colours do stand out and the bold, simple deco lines of each one look about as good as any RL superhero costume ever has. Now if only their CG elements looked as good as their practical ones. I'm looking at you, Cyborg and Doomsday.
Something I've been thinking about lately that I'd like to hear other people's ideas for. What would you like to see out of the MCU in the future? I think I saw someone mention TV movies for Agent Carter, which sounds fun.
Some ideas I had:
- An anthology film. This would be a great way to get a taste of a bunch of different characters that aren't popular enough for film, but are too costly for TV, like Ghost Rider and Howard the Duck, or too big a name for TV, but not a big enough character for their own movie, like Hawkeye and Nick Fury. I'd love to include a Hank Pym Ant-Man section from the 70's, that'd be fun. It could really delve into just how vast the MCU is and celebrate it. Have some character from the shows turn up. Make it fun. Maybe some unlikely team ups.
- I'd like for the universe to have more of a connective tissue running through it. The news segments they produced for their marketing campaign is something I'd like to see more of. I want Trish Talk to be a podcast. My first thought was she would mostly be reacting to things in the world, but I think there's more that could be done with this idea.
I'm sure I'll think of some more things in the future. Anyone else have any ideas for things you'd like to see added or changed in the MCU?
I'd love to see a Lola Run kind of movie where there's a ton of little plots with lots of characters going on, all interweaving into one main sequence of events and conclusion.
But for just stuff I want out of MCU in the next few years... more headliners, and more embracing their comicbook-ness the way Guardians 2 did and Ragnarok seems to be doing. Maybe another ensemble movie that's not Avengers, showing that there are more groups and lots more kinds of heroes springing up in the world. In general, more universe building and fleshing out - Phase 2 actually didn't have a lot of that, and more altered what we already had.

But I would love a movie that is about Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyne in the '60s, although the special effects might be massive just for the anti-aging.
- More diversity in the movies' tone. I like the brand of humour they present (particularly in Civil War, which it was there but subdued enough). I'd like a slightly more serious take (like the Netflix shows) or, if the character allows it, to just go nuts and go absolutely fuckin' silly about it. Smarter movies would do that too; I was slightly disappointed with Doctor Strange because all the stuff with the Ancient One pointed this movie to be a very philosophical, personal take on the character, exploring all the ideology he presents, which in turn would make for my personal fantasy of the movies exploring Doctor Strange's character, shaping him up to be the leader of the Avengers in the future.
- Kamala Khan. I'm not a fan of the whole PC race/sex/whatever-lifting a character or hero identity just for the sake of it (I'm looking at you, Riri Williams), but I think Kamala is, by far, the most interesting character that doesn't yet have a movie. I want her in.

Riri's a new character, just like Kamala. This is actually the first time I've heard a negative opinion of her, as a character, after her comics started getting released.
On things I want: I know it might not be the most relevant but I want a Spider-Man anime, like how Iron Man, Blade, Wolverine, and the X-Men got anime adaptations, where Peter Parker goes to Japan and teams up with Takuya Yamashiro, the Japanese Spider-Man.

Yeah, the thing with Sue is that she provides a counterpart to Reed. She's not quite as smart as Reed, but she's much more of a normal and functioning person, while being the second smartest member of the team.
