Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

The concept she finds a remotely good idea to follow these two master martial artists to China to fight immortal supernatural ninja demon swordsmen is also hilariously absurd.

[up][up] She is rescuing a guy with a credit card, acts as a sounding board for Danny's trauma in one of the better character scenes in the show (in fact it is more or less her job to address how f... up Kunlun actually is), participates in the fight in China and I would mention the rest but that would be too much of a spoiler.

The only thing which irritates me is that at no point she mentions Matt or contacting Matt.

She mentions Matt a lot without explicitly saying his name, but considering who Matt is, he'd mostly likely fuck everything up if he tagged along.

Isn't this the kind of situation that she wanted Matt to be less involved with?

Matt seems to have taken a break from superheroing in season 2 of DD. Odd that she doesn't call Jessica, though.

Did she ever get Jessica's number?

I don't think she gets as close with Jessica as she did Matt and Luke

She only met Jessica for one episode and I'd doubt she could just call Jessica and say "Hey Jess, it's me, that one nurse who helped that guy you shot, wanna help us fight ninjas?". Though I would've liked to see Danny find out that Joy hired her to dig up dirt on the company's board members.

Well, it's odd that Claire never calls Luke, because he would have been really handy in that fight, too.

...oh, right, he's totally in prison. evil grin

I'm gonna guess Agents of SHIELD is getting a shortened season then. Probably for the best since they're cutting the budget. Inhumans airing on Fridays doesn't sound like they have much faith in it, though.

Also, back to Iron Fist, I just realized something: Danny's entire plan in Episode 8 to capture Madame Gao was fucking stupid. "Oh, I'll just fly my ass to China with my friend who knows swordfighting and my other friend with barely any martial arts experience to capture a woman who can throw me through a wall without even touching me!" Jesus fucking Christ Danny, you fucking suck. Like, at this point I'm reconsidering how much I dislike Matt Murdock when it dawns on me more and more about my problems with Danny. He's impulsive and stupid, and it's to the show's detriment because it just feels like he's doing this because the plot says so. I'm not opposed to Danny being an idiot and I understand why he's one, but it's still infuriating and kind of confusing, really.

And I think another issue I have is that Danny's personality is hard for me to latch on to. It's like Scott Buck was trying to figure out what to use for Danny's central arc: his anger issues? His desire to retake his company from the corporate assholes running it? His return to New York despite being appointed the defender of K'un L'un? I can latch onto who Matt Murdock is (Catholic struggling with blood knight tendencies and is kind of an asshole but means well), who Jessica Jones is (a smartass who has gone through a lot of shit and is fairly cynical), and who Luke Cage is (a nice guy who fights for what he believes in and acts as an inspiring symbol even though he's kind of apprehensive about it in the beginning). I just can't quite latch onto who Danny Rand is.

It's not a shortened season though. So are they just going to air two episodes at a time or something? That doesn't sound like something that would lead to a season 6.

Shit, they might be doing that then. Probably trying to burn through them like they did for Agent Carter.

This is almost a death knell for Ao S but I don't mind it. Fringe and Person of Interest finished their shows with fifth seasons this way and it was hype.

I'm gonna guess Agents of SHIELD is getting a shortened season then.
Actually, it's not. Inhumans is only eight episodes, so Agents of SHIELD isn't actually premiering midseason, it's premiering late in the fall — right after Inhumans ends, probably. ("Midseason" generally means during or after the winter break to fill in when other shows need to film new episodes or get cancelled.) And then Agents of SHIELD will have a full 22 episode season (if we believe Ming-Na Wen's Instagram), presumably with less breaks.

Basically, you remember how Agent Carter filled with winter break for Agents of SHIELD? Same deal, only Inhumans is coming first instead of in the middle.

Aaand it's confirmed for 22 episodes.

Yeah, did some looking and it's a full season order. If it's airing on Fridays, this is gonna be a death slot for it, but who knows, this could still be good. Probably gonna still have some good episodes.

Anyways, got done with episode nine of Iron Fist. I really hate Bakuto. Not as a character, but because his actor fucking sucks. He can't fucking act. Like, I thought Finn Jones was kind of weak as an actor, but there's at least moments where I feel like he's actually doing a good job. Bakuto? He's horrible. Absolutely horrible.

Damn, I just realized that it's Friday at 9 PM. Although, even though that is the Death Slot, AOS generally always did better time-shifted, so that's not really going to change. If ABC sees ratings stay the same or get a little better, they might, in fact, renew for Season 6.

Agents of Shield already did air in a dead spot last season and it did better there than any other show beforehand. Plus, this might allow some viewers who previously couldn't turn in because it was so late to do so now.

And it gets a full episode order, so this only means less interruption in the scheduling, which is a good thing. Last season was a nightmare, especially in the beginning, with the show skipping every other week because of the presidential debate, plus one hiatus between each story arc. Showing it with only one hiatus for Christmas and otherwise without interruption might do the ratings a lot of good.

Not being on the fall lineup is not that big a deal. Remember, everyone had pretty much written off AOS as cancelled anyway. It's lucky they got one last season to (maybe?) bring everything to a satisfying conclusion.
