Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

They're more or less evenly spaced, with a scene every few minutes. You'll have to stay until the end if you want to see them all.

Could anyone give me a spoiler-free description of where these scenes are in the credits?
They are interspersed throughout the credits. I believe the first one is actually the least important, while the second to last one of the most important. The final one (after the last credits) is just a really fun Easter Egg.

Aw, man, I missed a talk about Dogwelder.

[up][up]They're pretty evenly spaced. Only the second and third ones are important in the context of setting up future movies, but the other three are hilarious enough that you probably won't want to miss them anyway. I recommend sitting through it all.

Plus the credits themselves are fun.

Sweet. I hope they can find some way to boost its ratings.

The latter half of season one, almost all of seasons two and four, and certain episodes throughout season three were pretty great. I can think of shows that deserve it less. Hopefully more people start tuning in.

I stopped watching Agents of SHIELD a couple episodes into Season 2. I'll probably binge the whole show after it ends.

I am so happy! They even get a full season order. They apparently also have to lower the cost, which is a little bit of a bummer, but hopefully they will manage. It's not like I expect them to have Ghost Rider around in the next season, too.

For the record, this will make Ao S the longest running Marvel show ever (beating The Incredible Hulk). And it means that it will reach the 100 episode mark. Hopefully they will plan something special for the occasion....

[up] Ao S is not really made for binging, it is made for torturing yourself from week to week try to predict what happens next and then being surprised when the show goes into a direction which never occurred to you.

Huh. I had to look that up, but you're right: Incredible Hulk had a total of 82 episodes (83 if you cut the pilot in half) and three made-for-TV movies (with the incredibly goofy versions of Daredevil and Thor), which means that even now, Agents of SHIELD has outdone it. (AOS currently has 88 episodes over four seasons.)

Also, I'm going to reiterate here what I want from the 100th episode: I want them to spend their entire budget to get Robert Downey Jr...and then have him make a five second cameo, see Coulson, go "Huh," and then leave. That would be so hilarious. The rest of the episode would, of course, have to take place in one room, since there would be no more budget, but it would be worth it.

[up] It's kind of impressive if you consider that network TV is pretty much dying and Ao S is doing an ongoing storyline. Plus, there are few show which still go that strong after so many episodes.

[up][up] Make that Robert Downey Jr. 5 second cameo be him running like a madman yelling "Thanos is coming!!! We're screwed!!", and I'm sold.

Honestly, I would prefer it to see Nick Fury again. As much as I would like to see Coulson encountering Steve again and geeking out even more, I kind of like the "working in the background" feel Ao S has.

Hopefully the show can deal with the lower budget...I fear this will mean less characters overall.

Without clicking on this I dare to guess that it is just a bunch of speculations which boil down to "we don't know".

Some executive says Fox might make another one, Feige seems to have made his peace with it.

It sounds like it's confirmation that the Fantastic Four rights definitely aren't back at Marvel yet or close to it, and that on top of that Marvel Studios isn't fighting particularly hard to get them back either.

I don't blame Marvel for not wanting the rights back. Fox shit in that bed.

Honestly, to me the whole thing sounds like negotiations....Fox is threatening that they keep ruining the Fantastic 4. Marvel is all "yeah, we don't care...." while waiting politely for Fox to come to them and make an offer. I mean we all know that Fox is risking another financial flop with another F4 movie, and the time for making one is slowly running out. I think they have 7 years until they have to go into production, 8 years until they have to release a Fantastic 4 movie. Marvel's slate is full until 2020 anyway. At least. Once the whole sequels for Got G, Doctor Strange and hopefully Black Panther and Captain Marvel are factored in, they are pretty busy.

"Fox might make another FF."

Why the fuck would they? It hasn't been profitable for them in the slightest. I can understand not wanting to give them up but why not just let the rights lapse? I doubt they're going to suddenly get a profitable franchise after two failed attempts.

Yeah but they're not stupid. I don't see why they'd expect to make any kind of money on another one. Was the last one even profitable?

There isn't a lot of good reason for Fox to make another FF film after repeatedly running it into the ground, especially since they're starting to focus on the potential in exploring the X-Men universe instead.

I could see them making a Fantastic Four TV show, though.
