Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Yeah, I'm cool with Black Bolt using ASL too. They'd still need subtitles or to give him an interpreter for the audience's benefit, but that'd be a neat Bilingual Bonus.

io9 had an interesting thought on it:

I’m not saying Black Bolt needs to use full-on American Sign Language— in fact, some sign language speakers I talked to on Twitter about this said they’d rather he didn’t. Instead, they suggested he work with sign language speakers to create a form of communication based on ASL (since it’s an American show). It would use enough of the original language so people who are deaf and hard of hearing would understand it, therefore making sure it’s not complete gibberish, but it’d still have a few variances to make it unique to his character and the series. That’s sort of like what Dawn of the Planet of the Apes did, where actors worked with a translator to help merge ASL with how apes naturally communicate through their bodies.

As long as they're using any form of sign language (which is a big enough if as it is), they can use any sign language they want, modern or otherwise, including ASL, was my point.

Why is the spoken form alright, but not the sign language one?

I'm not a big fan of the spoken form either.

I prefer the idea of something either more archaic like the monastic language or as that post suggested, a hybrid language like they did in planet of the apes.

Fury and Iron Man are filming Infinity War.

I want Fury to complain about how he left for five minutes and they burnt the house down.

Didn't he already say that in Age of Ultron?

Mind you, it's not like it's gotten better since then...

So does Marvel have any, like, recurring villains besides Loki?

Ever gonna be a villain team-up movie?

Well there's Thanos, who's essentially the Overarching Villain for both the Avengers and the Guardians to this point; by extension, Thanos's adoptive daughter Nebula has appeared in both Guardians movies, though she's more of an Anti-Hero in Volume 2, and is set to show up again in Infinity War. Zemo definitely seems like he's being set up for a return appearance down the line, as he's very conspicuously spared at the end of Civil War, and while Dormammu is prevented from conquering the Earth in Doctor Strange, he's still out there and I doubt we've seen the last of him. Mordo also has his Start of Darkness in Strange, though its unclear where he's going as a character from hear out. And of course there's HYDRA as an organization, and Epileptic Trees about whether villains like Red Skull, Zola, or Ultron could have survived their defeats. But if there's any sort of villain team up at some point down the line, general speculation seems to point towards Zemo being at the heart of it, considering his comics role in connection to the Masters of Evil and the Thunderbolts, and he's left at the end of Civil War sitting in a cell with lots of time to stew in his own juices, reevaluate his motivations, and come up with new plans...

[up]I wont call thanos arecurren villian since a best is just cameos and name dropping, HYDRA better being off death since they are burn concept from now(the fact Agent of Shield make them a alien cult and said alien is now death make thing defintive) so the answer so far is pretty much Zemo, now the question is how they are going to handle him.

Of course Thanos is a recurring villain. He's central to the conflict of at least three movies: In the Avengers he's pulling Loki's strings, in Ao U's Ultron is stated to be his trojan horse, and in Gotg he's the man behind Ronan (before Ronan rebels).

Mordo and Dormmamu are also going to become recurring villains, pretty evidently.

Thanos is a bigger bad.

He hasn't gotten directly involved but he set off the plots to Avengers, Age of Ultron, and Guardians of the Galaxy.

So that's pretty recurry.

It doesn't have too many moving parts.

Ultron was made with the Mind Stone, which has its own intelligence. Thanos gave the Mind Stone to Loki.

Budda bing.

We still need a catchy name for the Mind Stone.

Eh, it's a pretty straightforward back up plan plan.

A) Send a mind-controlling device to fuck with their heads.

B) Watch them get torn from within.

D) Profit.

This was his actual plan. Tony Stark was the one who made it worse by deciding that the schematics he found inside a mind-controlling device should be used to build an A.I.

Did he know it was a mind-controlling device? Thor says it's the Mind Stone way later.

Loki uses the spear to control people's minds at several points during the first movie. At one point he attempts to do it on Stark himself and Stark just goes "nah mate doesn't work on me" so he's clearly aware.

Considering how Loki used it throughout the entirety of The Avengers (including an attempt to use it turn Stark himself)... yes, I would say he had to know it was a mind-controlling device.

In fairness to Tony whose fault everything is especially Secret Invasion, he was watching over the AI project every step of the way up until he went to a party and left Jarvis in charge

I like to think that The Mind Gym is constantly affecting those that come into contact with it. That's why Tony thought it was a good idea to mess around with it.

That's my headcannon and I'm sticking to it.

Wait, wasn't that what was supposed to be in the first place? A mix of Wanda's tampering with his mind and him being swayed by the Mind Gem? At least that's how I interpreted it.

The MIND GYM. The REALITY BARS. The SOUL SWINGS. The POWER TETHERBALL. The AETHER GO ROUND. The TIRE TESSERACT. All of it leading up to assembling the INFINITY SLIDE, so that Thanos can lay waste to the galaxy I mean playground and impress that creepy new kid, I think she's from Scandinavia or something?

If we ever get a "Villain Team Up" movie, it's probably going to be a Thunderbolts movie, and it's probably going to include at least a few newly adapted villains given a lack of preexisting stock to choose from.
