Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I'll actually take that over AOS constantly referencing the heroes by name at every available opportunity and then not showing them.
AOS pretty much stopped doing that after the first season. In fact, I hardly remember them mentioning any Avengers in the current season at all. They make an oblique reference to Nick Fury, but then again, he's been on the show, but that's it.

My dad watching Jessica Jones with me and mom: "I don't get it. Why is she afraid of him? He doesn't have any strength or anything."

Some people just don't get the allegories.

Try to explain to him the concept of PTSD, I guess?

Also, mind control. That's kind of important. If I recall, she was considerably less scared of him once she knew that she was immune.

Oh God! Natural light!

Male privilege: being able to believe that getting raped is a purely physical thing with no emotional component whatsoever.

That sure is a page-topper, alright.

Even if he doesn't get the allegory he should at least get why a mind controller is terrifying.

I already explained to him that Kilgrave's power is mind control. Then again it is kinda late.

A shockingly large number of people think rape only happens when it's a man grabbing a woman and holding her down while he has his way with her. That's why so many instances of Double Standard: Rape, Sci-Fi persist. A bunch of people just don't grasp the idea that things like mind controlling someone into sex or shape shifting into their partner is rape.

AOS pretty much stopped doing that after the first season. In fact, I hardly remember them mentioning any Avengers in the current season at all. They make an oblique reference to Nick Fury, but then again, he's been on the show, but that's it.

Which doesn't change anything I said at all, so I'll just reiterate that I found it extremely annoying.

Well, it changes the context from "they do it all the time" to "they did it in season one, they don't do it at all now." Lots of people thought season one was subpar, but it got much, much better and now it's pretty much one of the best shows on network TV.

Good thing I never said "They do it all the time." Drop it. Not everything is an invitation to a debate.

Drop what? I'm not having an argument, I just quoted what you literally wrote. Doing something "constantly" is exactly the same as doing it "a lot." I was pointing out that they no longer do that and, for some reason, you said that this didn't matter, even though it quite clearly does if one enjoys watching AOS and is a fan of the show. Saying that AOS "constantly" namedrops the Avengers creates a negative impression of it that isn't warranted, since it's not even true at the moment.

Because I wasn't wrong. I said I found the constant mentions to be annoying, and I stand by that. Nowhere did I say they're still doing it. Somehow this turned into a grammatical debate because someone was apparently mad I made fun of a show they like.

Hilariously, I was trying to move past it and talk about something else before you decided to step in.

I'm not trying to be argumentative. If I was, I apologize. I just find it extremely annoying when people complain about AOS doing something that it hasn't done in three seasons. Imagine if someone read the first Harry Potter book and then complained about the entire series using examples only from the first book.

Harry Potter's not my thing so I wouldn't know.
It...it was an analogy. Other analogies: it would be like complaining about Star Wars using only examples from The Phantom Menace or complaining about [insert thing you like here] using only examples from [that time that one thing you liked did something bad].

Thumped: for switching the discussion from the topic to a person. Doesn't take many of this kind of thump to bring a suspension. Stay on the topic, not the people in the discussion.

I know. I'm trying to change the subject and move on, as I have for several posts.
Well, that was a weird thing to write if you wanted to change the subject, because it just made me assume you didn't understand what an analogy was. Like you were the same species as Drax the Destroyer.
