Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Favorite theories overall for the MCU or just for Civil War? Because I had one old theory years ago that got disproven by Age of Ultron.

I had an old as fuck theory that Coulson would show up for maybe ten seconds in Age of Ultron.

I predicted Carol Danvers would have a cameo in basically every movie that was released after her movie was announced. Even before Brie Larson was cast in the role.

Her backstory as an Air Force pilot is just too cameo friendly to resist making such predictions since there's lots of ways for the USAF to show up and if she's in a full flight suit for her entire apperence they could just use a stand in.

At this point however I've accepted that she isn't going to appear before Infinity War, where she's already been confirmed. Maybe a post/mid-credit scene in Black Panther if we are lucky.

You were sorta right because she was gonna have a cameo in Age of Ultron at one point.

Let's see...I predicted that Rhodey would die, but then added the possibility that he would get a spinal injury instead, so I guess that doesn't really count.....

I predicted that Cap would end up in prison either taking the fall for his team or with his team on the run at the end of Civil war...I guess I was kind of wrong about that....kind of.....

Well, I was wrong about nearly every prediction I ever tried for Agents of Shield...I have now giving up trying, the show is too clever for me....

I remember guessing that part of plot would involve a defunct Ultron drone.

I thought Cap would become Nomad at the end, which he did in all but name.

Ditto Carol having a cameo.

I thought that Steve and Tony would be reconciled by the end, which didn't really happen.

Also, I kind of expected or at least hoped that Thunderbolts/Dark Avengers might show up and/or an evil fake Cap- still hoping

While I didn't expect it to happen, I like that joke theory that Steve would shout out during battle about not wanting to lose James and Tony would talk about also caring about James (or vice versa), and they'd realize they were talking about different people and would then reconcile.

Eh, maybe he'll have taken the name or it'll be referenced in Infinity War, there might be some hope.

On the opposite end of the spectrum I will forever cherish everyone telling me I was wrong and the Scepter wouldn't be the Mind Stone.

I still maintain that the Scepter being the Mind Gem is dumb. Age of Ultron just managed to salvage it by also revealing that it's a complex AI powered by the Mind Gem to continue Thanos's work, making it a less boneheaded move on his part to give it to Loki in the first place.

Speaking of Ultron, my pet theory back in the day was that the Clairvoyant from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was going to be revealed to be a complex AI developed by Hank Pym that had gained intelligence and was playing S.H.I.E.L.D. from within. Coulson's team would discover this and try to contain it. They'd manage to shut it out of S.H.I.E.L.D., but it would escape and infect Tony Stark's peacekeeper program, becoming Ultron.

I wound up not being too far off about a hostile AI infecting Tony's program, but was way off on both its origins and my assumption that the Clairvoyant would actually have a satisfying conclusion. And that the movies would give even a single solitary shit about what the show does.

Thinking about me being right about the Mind Stone again, I also called Loki's scepter being connected to Ultron's creation. Damn, I was 2 for 2 on one of my least favorite Marvel movies!

I also remember remember people thinking Hulk would be in Guardians 2 was a weirdly pervasive rumor across the internet for some reason.

I also entertained the idea the Clairvoyant would be an AI, but I didn't go that far.

I remember believing that Cap would die in Civil War only for Bucky to replace him. I actually believed that it'd happen when Steve was on top of Tony, beating him to a pulp. I was like "OH SHIT THIS IS WERE THE ARC REACTOR ON HIS CHEST BLOWS CAP TO PIECES". Actually, I'm still a little bit disappointed that that didn't happen.

I also believed, while seeing the first Avengers movie, that Tony would not be able to come back from that wormhole, drifting into space. Cue Guardians of the Galaxy.

When Age of Ultron was still on the horizon, there was much speculating on which Avengers "had" to die to raise the stakes (even though I did and still do maintain that killing off heroes just to artificially prove your villain is "fo' serious, yo" is bullshit), and I thought Ultron would kill Thor.

But how could I have thought that when Thor: Ragnarok had already been confirmed? Well, it seemed likely that Hela was going to be in the movie, I figured if it happened, the post-credit scene for Ao U would be Thor awakening in Helheim, and that Ragnarok would begin with Thor escaping from the land of the dead.

But that's not even the craziest part of my theory at the time. Since the clip of the Avengers each trying to lift Mjolnir and failing had already been officially posted, I thought Natasha'a line about not wanting to know whether she would be worthy would have led to a scene where after Thor was killed, an injured and disarmed Black Widow would desperately reach for a weapon to use against an approaching Ultron... only for Mjolnir to fly into her hand and transform her into the new Thor.

Hey, it would at least be better than keeping Jane Foster in the movies! tongue

Au contraire, I think making Jane into a new Thor would be the best way to salvage her character (as long as it was handled more gracefully than the comics and she wasn't still called Thor while the real one had to go by something else).

What if Darcy or Dr. Selvig became the new Thor instead?
