Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Two part movies, rather than just a movie and its sequel filmed back to back, only really started because of film franchises based on books that were too large for one reasonable length movie. The Hobbit pushed that goodwill too far and Divergent never seemed to catch on anyway. I know a number of people praised the MCU for a two-part Avengers because they, more or less, "earned" it. With Justice League there is evidence the Part One/Part Two was just announcing a sequel (like The Godfather) and was never intended to be a single movie split in two. The fact they weren't filming back to back is the biggest claim to that.
I will say, filming back to back tends to be the biggest problem with two part movies, as they just see the end of the first film as a stopping point rather than a conclusion.
The first two Divergent films did well proportional to their budgets. 288 million for the first movie and 297 million for the second. It as the third movie, the aforementioned part 1 of a 2-part finale, that outright flopped, bringing in only 179 million, significantly less than its predecessors.
As for Justice League, I'd seen it suggested that them ditching that model may have been influenced by the backlash against BVS (since we already have Word of God confirmation at least some things about the movie were altered after BVS).
Regardless I think Marvel saw the growing backlash against the trend and wisely wanted to dodge that bullet. What's more, being a shared universe pretty much prevents them from doing a two-parter in the traditional mold since unlike other franchises, the universe doesn't just cease to exist in between Avengers movies.
Avengers 4: Does it really matter because you are going to see it
On Justice League, the only major change made was that the released date of the sequel is in limbo. Production on JL started weeks after BVS, so any script changes would be minimal (Snyder said after the response to Bv S he was directing JL a little differently than expected, hinted to be things like Ezra Miller improvising a lot).
With Avengers, it's unlikely the switch came from any major script changes, but just a matter of seeing how best to market the films. For all we know, the second film will be an Immediate Sequel with a Time Skip after the first act.
So I decided to cook up my own fantasy casting for a Squadron Supreme movie, heavily based on the Supreme Power MAX title, because I enjoy it, although I'd be willing to discuss tweaks both to the plotting and cast. Part of the frustrating challenge is that many of my prime candidates for certain roles are either too old, already cast in the Marvel Universe, or already locked into other franchises.

What manner of plot would you want for a Supreme Power movie?
As I recall the initial miniseries was a sort of Reality Ensues take on Superman's origins
Forever liveblogging the AvengersMore or less, yeah, the Squadron Supreme movie is not unlike the Supreme Power miniseries. Make cuts where necessary to fit it within an hour and a half/two hours. I think ending it on Hyperion's big, seismic "Leave me alone" punch to the north pole works as a powerful end for the film.
My various fanfics.I'd be interested in seeing reactions to the horribly racist black Not-Batman.
But really, given that the original wasn't a typical team book or anything and was more just a look at various largely disconnected individuals coming into superpowers, a Supreme Power movie might as well just focus on Hyperion and exclude everyone else.

2 part films aren't seen as an honest business model anymore, so that was for the best.
