Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

I only really knew him from Iron Man Armored Adventures, but I loved him there. He's a good example of an effective villain with wildly different (and often less powerful) abilities than the hero who uses them to good effect regardless.
Him and the Living Laser. I really want to see the Living Laser, hopefully in a movie.
That's the exact reason to do it. Throw down the gauntlet. Pimp slap, time for a duel.
Or have Avengers 4 be vs. The Squadron Sinister.
My various fanfics.I guess this technically belongs on the DCEU thread, but that's A) locked and B) I don't want DC to touch it:
I want a Planetary adaptation. Preferably in the style of the MCU Netflix shows, but with more money for effects and locations.
It'll never happen for a lot of reasons, not the least of them being that now is probably not an opportune time for a ('nother) harsh deconstruction of the Fantastic Four. But I still want it.

I love Planetary and, yeah, it really needs to be on something like Netflix or AMC. I mean, there's a version of it I can see on CBS and...god, that would suck. CBS has had good shows before (Person of Interest), but they are quickly losing everything interesting. And the CW would stuff it full of young people, which wouldn't work at all.
Ah.
On another note, I wouldn't be interested in a Planetary series, mostly because I didn't really like Planetary. Once Elijah remembers he's the fourth man, any energy or drama is sucked right out of the series and it becomes even more masturbatory and up its own ass than before.
So. Squadron Supreme. Do you try to adapt Supreme Power?

My various fanfics.Yes, Batman's appearance was one of the only times that Planetary alluded to/referenced/used pastiches of/crossed over with other superhero franchises that I liked because I guess Ellis has an erection in the shape of Stately Wayne Manor. Batman's the only franchise that doesn't get the "Look how much deeper/smarter/better we are than all other comics" treatment and Batman is the only person Who gets one up on Elijah in the entire series.

My various fanfics.Yeah, okay, that's seems like you're projecting a disdain for other comics and stories on Planetary that I don't find to be the intent. Planetary doesn't think it's better than the stories it explores. It just examines them from a different, slightly skewed angle, following certain concepts to their conclusion. Or a conclusion.
I really don't think it's shitting on those things. Just the opposite, I think they're shown with a certain amount of love.
Eh, maybe it's because I only read the Omnibus once, but I never got the feeling that Planetary ever loved anything other than itself, hence my description of it as masturbatory. Hell, by the end it's literally just handing Elijah the answers so they can speed through the plot and get on to what it seems the entire purpose of the comic is: empty, shallow, esoteric pontification.
My various fanfics. It is masturbatory and it certainly speeds through its conclusion, mostly because the last third of the series came out over the course of about ten years and I think Ellis and Cassaday just wanted an ending at that point, even if it meant leaving a lot of loose ends hanging. But I still don't see it as loving itself nearly as much as its many, many influences. I just don't think you can incorporate as many different sources as accurately as Planetary does without loving the originals, and the art form (visual storytelling, whatever the medium) in general.
A lot of the great comics tend to be masturbatory in a way, in the sense that they're comics about comics. Hazard of a medium with such a short life cycle.

Eh, I guess that explains why Elijah defeats Reed Richards by literally dropping him down a fucking hole.
My various fanfics.Honestly, I feel like I was more interested about the world of Planetary than by the actual story itself. And most of the things I was interested in were murdered, either by Elijah or not-The-Fantastic-Four. Which probably aided my resentment.
But anyhow, we got off topic.
So.
Squadron Supreme.
My various fanfics.I hope Spider-Man Homecoming adapts this moment
◊.

Somewhat, but not exactly.
Though the overall idea is kind of the same, with a Big Bad in charge of SHIELD, Winter Soldier was more of a spy thriller that was all about The Reveal: a previously benevolent ally turns out to have been run by evil the whole time. That it at first looks like a misunderstanding until the shocking swerve is really important to the whole thing.
Dark Reign is a Villain with Good Publicity plot. Everyone knows from the start that the Big Bad is bad news, but they can't convince the right people or oust them without cause, and so the whole thing is about playing against a known baddie who has all the power, and is invested in making the heroes feel powerless as he goes through a Villainous Breakdown. Damage control, doing what they can, keeping up hope, etc.
The fact that they are superficially similar is more than enough to keep Marvel from using it, though, at least with SHIELD. Maybe if, instead, we get someone Obviously Evil in charge of the Avengers (though most of the characters I can think of for that role are dead in the MCU). Like if, I dunno, Stane's son takes over Thunderbolt Ross' job.
Or maybe do the Thunderbolts instead, but have a Dark Reign-esque plot with the [insert baddie] as the leader everyone knows is going to self-destruct.
