Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Luke Cage Season 2 starts shooting in June. Not sure if mentioned before but Punisher isn't gonna have an appearance from Claire.

Apparently the name for Avengers 4 is a Spoiler Title, hence why they haven't announced it yet.

I know the title of Avengers 4. It's going to be called Avengers: Everybody Gonna Die.

I just hope it's an actual Spoiler Title and not "We totes think this is a spoiler even though everyone already knows it and there's basically no reason not to call it that Title".

Like, if they hype up how secret it is and then it just turns out to be something like, "Avengers: Thanos Arrives", it's going to be pretty disappointing.

It might be subtitled after a plot from the comics that has an event so charged and iconic that knowing it would spoiler parts of the plot.

Like if they had called Amazing Spider-Man 2 "The Night Gwen Stacy Died."

I assume the subtitle is going to be a spoiler for Infinity War. It's not like they're going to be keeping it a secret past release date. tongue

My money's on "Something something Adam Warlock".

It also depends on what they consider a spoiler. Depending on their temperament, they could even consider calling it Avengers: The Infinity Gauntlet a spoiler because it would spoils the fact that Thanos gets all the gems.

One of the 5 post credit scenes in Got G Vol.2 kind of confirms a popular fan theory about Stan Lee in the movies.

So, here are some actual things it could be:

  • Avengers: Acts of Vengeance (fits the previous title structure set by "Age of Ultron" and would indicate that it involves a large number of supervillains, rather than one big one)
  • Avengers: Secret Invasion (indicates that shapeshifters or something similar have invaded Earth)
  • Avengers: Dark Reign (indicates someone evil has taken over the US/the world)
  • Avengers: The Crossing (indicates that the movie is going to be super awful and will almost immediately be retconned)

Wouldn't Winter Soldier already cover about the same ground as Dark Reign? And we can't use Daken, Norman Osborn, or Venom. Honestly, the Sentry's a whole can of worms that'd probably feed the whole fandom war between the DCEU and MCU in a way I'd just as soon avoid. And Secret Invasion would require Skrulls, which they also can't use.

And while this would in no way stop them from doing it, AOS's LMD arc was probably enough of a Secret Invasion adaptation for me.

Ignoring the Sony deal for Spider-Man rights, we could probably use Norman as long as we never mention the Green Goblin. Green Goblin Norman is a Spider-Man villain but Iron Patriot Norman is an Avengers villain.

Legally, I'm certain there'd be no problems with Norman Osborn as an Evil Counterpart to Tony Stark, assembling his own Dark Avengers and/or Thunderbolts with his own cutting-edge weapons technology.

And we can't use Daken, Norman Osborn, or Venom.
Are you sure they can't use Norman Osborn? Because they used Spider-Man in Civil War, so they might be able to use Norman Osborn, which would be pretty cool.

And Secret Invasion would require Skrulls, which they also can't use.
Not necessarily — they could substitute a different alien race or they might have traded something to Fox for the rights to the Skrulls. I mean, Agents of SHIELD already did something similar to Secret Invasion with the last episode of their LMD arc and they did it so well, so I don't really want it to be that, but it's possible.

I want Kang the Conqueror, damn it.
Unfortunately, James Gunn has said that Kang's rights are with Fox. Which is sad, because I would love an adaptation of The Kang War. The only downside to doing Kang would be that they would introduce time travel to the MCU and so far, I think time travel is one of the sole science fiction plots they haven't used and it would open a whole can of worms.
