Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I thought the quality difference between the first and second halves of Season 2 was much better than the quality difference between the first and second halves of Season 3. Whitehall wouldn't have lasted beyond the first half but he was a fun villain to watch when he was on.

[up][up]Posted yesterday.

They did Half Nelson and episodes of Billions, both of which are execellent.

Someone mentioned Ward outstaying his welcome and that was my big problem as well. It was the same problem Heroes had with fucking Sylar.

I actually liked Ward's breakdown over the course of Season 2. If they'd killed him off right at at the end, that would've probably worked perfectly for me— he'd shed all the traits that let him pretend he was the hero and wronged party, but still refused to accept any blame for his actions. So kill him then and there. That could've been a pretty satisfying conclusion to the tale of Grant Ward.

I'm not even slightly familiar with that particular directorial team they picked for Captain Marvel, but their movies are critically well-received and well-acted according to Rotten Tomatoes, which is a very positive indication for their general directing skills.

Beyond that I trust in Kevin Feige's judgement. That man's ability to find good directors is a boarderline superpower.

One of the lesser-known Elders of the Universe, the Producer.

[up]So, he's Mojo?

The second new Guardians Gunn had wanted to have in Guardians Vol. 2 was Adam Warlock.

“I love Adam Warlock. He’s one of my favorite characters. In all truth, I wrote an early treatment where I had Adam Warlock as a part…this is your big scoop, because I don’t think I’ve told anybody this… It was Adam Warlock. He was a big part of the screenplay and I realized it was one character too many. And I adored the character. I adored what we had done with him. I think we did something really creative and unique with Adam Warlock. But it was one character too many and I didn’t want to lose Mantis and Mantis was more organically part of the movie anyway. So I decided to save him for later.”

Sounds like he will be in Part 3.

Ward really overstayed his welcome in Season 3. He kind of moved down a few spots on my ranking of the best TV villains because of that decay.

I'm kind of wondering what Brett Dalton's contract looks like.

Man, Feige making a cameo appearance as Mojo would be fantastic.

Too bad Mojo's an X-Men character.

No an extradimensional being who kidnaps people for his TV show.

I mean I know his general gist

I just didn't know if he had been added to that arbitrary group of ridiculous single issue wonkers like Ego had been

I enjoyed Brett Dalton in more or less all incarnations, but I think Free-Agent Ward is my favourite (because it was so much fun trying to figure him out), followed by Frameward and then Squidward - because that was just creepy. But yeah, Hydraward really showed how much he is not leader material - but that was kind of the point of this arc, wasn't it.

Was it Feige or Loeb's decision to hire Scott Buck for Iron Fist/Inhumans? If it's the former, then that's a broken streak.

As far as I know Feige has nothing to do with the TV side of things.

Speaking of Feige, sounds like Adam Warlock won't be in Infinity War either.

“He’s not. He’s not in Infinity War. But he will be a part of the future Marvel cosmic universe and a pretty important part of that.”

The biggest flaw of the Centipede arc is the identity of the Clairvoyant. The show kinda forgot it's in a superhero universe for that one. It set up a supernatural mystery for the protagonists to solve, had a bunch of characters naysay the possibility of a supernatural answer, and then culminated it an the bland unmasking of a wholly mundane threat, confirming that there was never anything supernatural about it in the first place. In a superhero show.

Not sure if I'd call it a superhero show given none of the characters are actually superheroes, just government agents doing their job.

[up]I actually think that was a major flaw in the way the show was marketed. Season 1 was very much a police procedural set in a superhero universe but all the promotional stuff focused very heavily on the "set in a superhero universe" part. Up to the point the promos were promising things like "See where the Avengers left off!" which of course pissed off people when what they actually got was a show about a bunch of human people in business suits.

Question for people who've read more Marvel comics than I have:

What exactly is so great about Adam Warlock? Everything I've read about him makes him sound so incredibly dull.

[up][up][up] In terms of season 1, I would agree. But by now, I think it counts as superhero show, considering that Mockingbird, Quake, The Patriot, Ghostrider and Slingshot turned up in at the very least recurring roles (or as series regulars).

Another set of big cameos for Guardians confirmed. Michelle Yeoh appears as the female Starhawk and Ving Rhames appears as Charlie-27. They're part of the original Silver Age Guardians.
