Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

It was just concept art, they said Brie Larsen hasn't even worn a prototype costume yet.

Black Panther should sounds fucking epic.

"This is not a world that we've ever seen—as big as it is, as advanced as it is, and also the respect and the homage paid to its past traditions," Angela Bassett, serving for the gods in regal headdresses and flowing white dreadlocks as T'Challa's mother, Ramonda, teased in the clip. Judging from the concept art and brief glimpses of behind-the-scenes footage, the film will be as lush as it is sci-fi: shots of T'Challa in his upgraded Black Panther suit in the jungle, fighting in a bar and giving a political speech. A mountain glowing with vibranium. At one point, if I'm not mistaken, I saw an armored rhinoceros. (I think I saw an armored rhinoceros. There are probably weaponized rhinos in Black Panther, guys.)

Okay, so apparently I was misled and it's all just descriptions.

Shoot. sad

However! I really like the direction they're going for Captain Marvel's costume:

The costume was pulled straight from the pages of Marvel Comics. The most notable difference is the downplaying of the yellow which grabs the eye of those looking at Carol Danver's constume. Instead, it is a much lighter yellow, which can appear to be white at a glance. Otherwise, the suit on the cover of Kelly Sue Deconnick's Captain Marvel #1 is a quite accurate representation of what fans can expect to see in live action.

Sweet! I'm glad that it sounds like they're going for the KSD costume, because I'm not quite feeling the one she has in the comics right this instant. It's like they tried to fix what wasn't broken. The KSD costume is just perfection.

Also, I wonder if we'll see Kit Renner... Probably not yet. tongue

I don't even want to know how he upgrades from this.

Damnit, Korg and Miek make friends with Thor; they are replacing Hulk in the Planet Hulk storyline with Thor! RIP Caiera.

I thought the fact that Ragnarok was going to be using bits of Planet Hulk was evident from the moment they announced the planet Sakaar would be appearing.

They apparently can't make more Hulk movies 'cause of contract distribution rights so they're using Thor as a proxy to make that Planet Hulk movie everyone's been asking for.

[up][up]Caiera sounds like she's being made into a Composite Character with Valkyrie from everything that's been released. I.E. the villain's mysterious female enforcer with a troubled past who is initially an antagonist but switches sides after developing a bond with one of the heroes. Just sounds like that hero is Thor rather than the Hulk this time.

Which, ironically makes Hulk a Composite Character with the Silver Surfer.

I was hoping Thor would be a Composite Character with Silver Surfer and Hulk would still have his own role in the Planet Hulk storyline. I was also hoping Hulk at the end of this movie would be king of Sakaar with his wife, Caiera, by his side.

Were this a Hulk movie, that would probably occur.

My biggest concern about the movie is that it's trying to be Planet Hulk but it also wants to be about Hela invading Asgard or something? I fear we're going to get two disjointed narratives with not enough time to flesh out either.

Yeah it's still Thor's movie. A true Planet Hulk adaptation would necessitate the almost complete lack of any other Avengers (aside from a Silver Surfer-esque role) so that Hulk gets the spotlight to himself.

I was thinking Hulk as king would just be in a "Where Are They Now?" Epilogue. Maybe as the stinger.

Sounds like that they're adapting Aneka/Ayo relationship but with Okoye replacing Aneka. Wouldn't that make it the first gay relationship in the movies?

Amusingly some people apparently thought Korg was the rock monster Thor kills at the beginning of The Dark World. It'd be funny if he at least notices the resemblance.

Waititi talks a little bit about Korg.

His name is Korg, like the piano, and he’s a Kronan! I mean, I know you’ve seen (Thor) Dark World. At the beginning of Dark World, there’s a Kronan there. This is kind of a relation to that guy. He’s not as tall. He’s sort of about eight feet tall, and he’s um, made of rocks. He’s one of the creatures featured in the Planet Hulk storyline along with another character called Miek who is also in the film, so we’re borrowing those from their storyline and putting them in the arena, the Contest of Champions, that the Grandmaster, Jeff Goldblum runs on the planet Sakaar, which the Hulk is the main champion.

He’s one of the few characters to befriend Thor on the planet. He helps him out. Sort of explains how things go and becomes an ally to Thor.

We wanted to change the idea of an obvious choice of how the character would sound,” Waititi said. “Even though he’s huge and heavy, he has a very light soul. He’s very lovable, and has a good amount of humor.

I love the detail of the games being called the Contest Of Champions.

As he exists now, without a narrative of his own to develop him, Banner being stuck in Hulk form as a warlord king of a distant planet would be more of a Downer Ending to his story.

A Planet Hulk movie on its own could probably give him a full plot and arc to set it up, but as a subplot in Thor's movie it's not so great an ending.

Now I'm disappointed that the Okoye/Ayo relationship isn't happening[1]. Hopefully Aneka shows up in the movies some day so it could happen.

[up]Hopefully we learn during SDCC and with casting announcements.

I didn't expect an Aneke/Ayo-type relationship to happen — for one thing, their relationship originated in Ta-Nehisi Coates' Black Panther run which was just started as filming for the movie Black Panther started, meaning that the script had already been locked down. It does sound like they might have included some hints and teases at the relationship, without actually including anything romantic, which makes sense — they can only change so much after the movie goes into production. (Plus, Marvel/Disney might still be gun-shy about including a gay relationship in their movies, even after Beauty and the Beast make bank.)

I'm much more curious about who they got as director for Captain Marvel — it can't be Niki Caro, since she's directing the live action version of Mulan. According to this article, the other two contenders were Lesli Linka Glatter and Lorene Scafaria. Glatter is mainly a television director, while Scafaria directed Seeking a Friend for the End of the World.
