Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Yes. Because it f*cking accomplished something.

There are basically two ways for a character to die. They can die tragically to raise the stakes or they can die purposefully, capping off their character arc in a moment of sacrifice. Tripp managed to do neither.

One could argue it helped set the tone for after Daisy was revealed as an Inhuman by having it serve as a catalyst for Simmons going a bit into anti-Inhuman bigot mode, but they kind of forget about him regardless.

Simmons being Anti-Inhuman also didn't have much of an effect on the rest of the series.

I'm not even that far in the show. Aww, I liked Tripp.

Simmons going anti-Inhuman worked for the one arc and then she grew out of it. So yeah, wasn't too important in the long run.

And yeah, he was alright as a character but he was kinda bland to me.

I liked that his grandfather was in the Howling Commandos, and that he made it feel like the team could grow and change beyond the core cast we'd met in the first season. Then Bobbi and Hunter left, the Secret Warriors were disbanded, and Lincoln died, which all felt like it was reinforcing the status quo. I like the show's cast, but the world does feel smaller when they have an obvious coat of Plot Armor that others lack.

Honestly I kind of liked that his heroic sacrifice accomplished nothing, because it doesn't make it in any way less. Is the fire fighter who runs into a burning house in any way less heroic when it turns out that there is actually nobody in in?

[up][up] I assume that's where the show got its revolving door of black people reputation.

I'll never forgive him for murdering Tara for ostensibly this reason. It's why Season 6 is even worse than Season 7.

Anyway, I haven't seen any comic book movies since Batman vs. Superman. That's obviously DC but I'm just wondering what Marvel comic films have come out and which ones are the best?

I loved BTVS Season 6. Dark as fuck and meta as hell. I get not liking how relentlessly depressing it was, but as the culmination of the show's central conceit of Real Life being the Real Monster, it was very clever.

It took me a while to figure out who were were talking about when bringing up the person he died doing a spin kick.

Then I realized it was poor Triplett.

Nope, Ao S got the revolving door for black characters reputation when the Netflix show started to kill black heroic characters left and right. It was never deserved, especially since the complain started when Trip died who at this point was the only black Shield Agent who died - mind you, at this point Victoria Hands, Izzi and her team and Koenig number 1 had already been killed, so the claim that Ao S has a tendency to kill of black characters was never deserved. They just happened to have two black characters who were written out of the show because they had different gigs.

You're assuming he doesn't bite it this season. His character arc has mostly been about his betrayal, his experiences under mind control, helping Fitz heal, finally getting that shotgun axe, and being The Big Guy. He's accomplished and/or obtained most of these things, and this current arc has given him a love interest, hope for the future, a near-crippling injury from a brainwashed team mates, and a Bash Bros role with Coulson.

Wait, "a near crippling injury"? I don't remember anything like that happening. Although, kudos to you for using "hope for the future," which is pretty cruel considering Hope is the name of Mack's dead daughter and he only has her back because the entire world is a Matrix-like simulation and eventually, he will have to realize that she's not real.

But he did get a love interest. Hopefully, if they renew AOS for a fifth season (come on, ABC), they'll up Natalia Cordova-Buckley to main character, because Yo-Yo is awesome. (She would also be the second main character with superpowers.)

OK, I'm continuing to watch Luke Cage, and just a few minutes of Diamondback is fucking ridiculous. I miss Cottonmouth. Shades and Mariah are finally becoming a bit better but that's mostly because they play off each other so well.

EDIT: Got done with Episode 8. Diamondback is...confusing. I hate how he's so fucking hammy and throws around stupid Biblical references, but I like how him and Luke have the Cain and Abel dynamic going on. Some moments, he feels genuinely creepy and threatening. When he says "N*****, I am your brother" and shoots Luke into the garbage truck, that was kind of sinister. When he's threatening Misty and talking in an exaggerated, obnoxious tone like he's trying to sound like a creep? Annoying. The stuff with Mariah and Shades is more exciting (hell, Mariah's descent into becoming like Mama Mabel and upping the sliminess is captivating) and reminds me of how Daredevil Season 2 bounced between the genuinely good Punisher subplot and the awful Hand subplot, except Diamondback has a bit of depth and a motive that makes more sense than whatever the fuck was going on with the Hand.

EDIT 2: Episode 9, Diamondback is actually shown off a bit better in this one. He's a bit less silly and a bit more threatening. The fake out death ending was stupid though.

[up] Oh, more or less everything about Diamondback is stupid. What angers me the most, though, is that at the beginning of the show, various characters lists ways in which Luke Cage is vulnerable...he can be drowned, poisoned, suffocated, and if you can't attack him directly, you can always attack the people close to him. And then the show goes and does NONE of that (it even skips over the question of the fate of Luke's Landlady whose whole source of income has been destroyed because of him), and instead invents special bullets. It's so lazy!!!!
