Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

If they go with Nomad, that is. I hope they do but without that stupid as hell costume from the comics.

Or he could just call himself "the Captain" like he did for a while in the comics.

Or we could actually get the Captain on the show, which would be hilarious.

Mostly in the sense people (both in and out of universe) blame him for shit he wasn't even responsible for.

You mean he wasn't responsible for getting Elektra killed, completely destroying his relationship with Foggy, and making Fisk promise to destroy him and and everyone he loves?

Cause Matt Murdock did that.

You all say he's the Tony Stark of Netflix. I say get them together: the combined bad luck of the two of them fucking up everything in one place would cancel each other out and probably stop Thanos before he even had a chance to do it himself.

As much as I love the scene where Matt meets Kingpin in prison, I always thought it was silly when Matt's talking all big and even making threats related to Vanessa, then Kingpin threatens his friends and he's all "Nooooo, leave them alone, they didn't do anything!"

Like, what the hell did he think would happen?

You mean he wasn't responsible for getting Elektra killed, completely destroying his relationship with Foggy, and making Fisk promise to destroy him and and everyone he loves?

Nobu killed Elektra. The breakdown of his friendship with Foggy wasn't entirely his fault, it's always overlooked that Foggy is also a tad unreasonable with Matt (he clearly despises his vigilante lifestyle and will take every opportunity to chew him out on it, at one point even suggesting Matt's trying to save Punisher because he's a vigilante, not because of his lawyer duties) and the fact Matt really had his hands full this season. He's practically sweating spinal fluid by 5 and isn't able to be everywhere at once, which jeopardizes his role as Foggy's partner and Nelson and Murdock.

He did mess up with Fisk though, but by that point Matt's a goddamn husk who's barely alive. He messes up mostly by having terrible communication skills, but people blame him for a lot of stuff that was just plain outside his control (his absence at the trials is entirely due him having no choice but to stop the Hand or else Hell's Kitchen is reduced to rubble). At one point Matt tries telling Foggy that Elektra is the cause of this and Foggy basically swerves to saying this is all Matt's fault for his crimefighting (which...doesn't really make sense).

Despising the fact that your best friend spends his nights getting his face broken open in an insane crusade to try and punch crime isn't unreasonable. One of the superhero genre's biggest flaws tends to be when we're expected to behave as if a vigilante lifestyle is in any way rational or sane. That's part of why Foggy's one of the better characters in the show: because he doesn't go, "Yes, Matt, that sounds like a wonderful lifestyle choice. Have fun dying in a broken pile of limbs tonight. I've got the coroner on speed dial!"

Yes. Matt is also responsible for Amazing Spider-Man 2 being a cluttered mess. Also, every time Ghost Dad showed up? Matt in a costume.

Throughout ASM 2, every time Peter considers hooking up with Gwen again, her father's ghost appears to give him a boner-killing glare. Captain Stacy basically made it his personal mission in the afterlife to ensure Peter Parker never gets an erection again.

Oh yeah, the ghost of that guy who ripped off Bill Hicks and got ten times more popular for it.

Anyways, back to my earlier question, what are some comic characters who recurred in Luke Cage and Iron Fist's comics that could be brought in as antagonists?

@Tobias: Yeah it isn't healthy at all, but this is a superhero show after all, and it's exceedingly clear Daredevil's existence is necessary for Hell's Kitchen. So it does get a little absurd when after Matt saves the city from downfall some four times, Foggy acts as if he's skipping class to smoke marijuana. Foggy even implies Matt does this on purpose when he tells him "Stop talking as if these things just happen to you, Matt!", as if Matt somehow has any influence over whichever weird mobster of eldritch ninja crawls from the pit that particular week to try to destroy Hell's Kitchen. As if Matt could just stop being Daredevil and all the evil he's fighting would just go "poof!".

By the way: Luke Cage's rogues gallery is abysmal, but Iron Fist has the Steel Serpent (which the finale of IF sets up), Zhou Cheng (the Drunken Master in episode 7, who's a lot more ruthless and serious in the comics), Master Khan and you could say Nu-An.

Apparently the character Chemistro appeared in Luke Cage's comic at one point. Maybe use him? Like, not as an antagonist but maybe like how they used Melvin Potter in Daredevil.

Oh, Luke Cage has a ton of villains. There's Bushmaster, Chemistro, Cheshire Cat, Comanche (who is usually Shades' partner), Discus and Stiletto (who were the sons of the warden of Seagate), "Cockroach" Hamilton, Gideon Mace, Goldbug, Mr. Fish, Nightshade, Senor Muerte and Senor Suerte (yes, really), Spear, and Steeplejack. Of these, honestly, I think Nightshade is the one I'd love to see most. Well, and "Cockroach" Hamilton, just 'cause of his name.

Iron Fist has a lot less recurring bad guys. Aside from the Meachums and the Steel Serpent (Davos), the biggest enemy was Master Khan. Then there's Ferocia, who used to be one of the wolves that killed Danny's mother, and Scimitar. Both of them serve Master Khan. Of course, there was another very popular character that was supposed to be Iron Fist's recurring foe: Sabretooth. Yep. I very much doubt they can use him though.

Mr. Fish looks fucking hilarious. I'd like to see them use Goldbug. Just the name Goldbug sounds fun. I knew about Sabertooth being an Iron Fist villain originally, didn't they originally have it where he wasn't a mutant but some dude in a suit?

Comanche actually showed up in Luke Cage already, at Seagate, partnered up with Shades. I don't think we see him after that, although I vaguely remember Luke mentioning both their names together, maybe in the first episode when Shades first shows up.
