Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Why is the vid not available? Wasn't it something official? I also can't see the New York Bulletin properly.....

It appears Netflix took down the video almost immediately. The NY Bulletin website confirms though: "Watch “Marvel’s The Defenders” All Episodes Streaming Only on Netflix August 18."

As for what was on the video: it was security footage of all four Defenders getting onto an elevator, with the Midland Circle Financial logo on the wall. Matt is wearing a mask around his face (which just looks like a bandanna, not his Daredevil mask). Jessica looks up at the security camera, then reaches up and smashes it. The end.

You can see a screenshot of the video here.

Man. I hope Matt pulls his head out of his butt in time for this, otherwise Jess is gonna break him over her knee.

Oh man oh man oh man.

Even if it's just grainy elevator cam footage, that's technically our first time seeing all four of them on-screen at the same time, isn't it?

So excited.

Ao S dedicated the new episode to Bill Paxton.

Man, it's still 4 months away. I'd be royally pissed off if we didn't had the Guardians and Spidey movies to look forward between now and the Defenders.

[up] Honestly, what is the issue? We currently get Agents of Hydra (complete with Madam Hydra) until Got G drops and then we can start rewatching the whole Defender verse (with a pause for Spider-man) so that we are prepared for when they turn up. All in all, we are kept busy.

I got super bored super fast by Agents of... wait, did you just said Hydra? The fuck's going on on that show?

But yeah, never finished Season 1. From what I've read on some threads it gets much better after Season 1, but since I'm a sucker for continuity and Agents of Shield is ignored 10 times out of 9 by the movies then I really can't be bothered. I mean, I'll probably end up watching it when the Defenders are done (I'm actually more invested in them), but for the meantime, I really don't care.

Well. The Agents of SHIELD had to expose a robot to what was basically the Necronomicon to save Coulson and Fitz from Limbo but then the robot's creator wanted to get the book in order to make Everything Great Forever and we had a bunch of LMDs replacing people and the end result is that the majority of the main cast has been uploaded into what is basically the Matrix - an alternate reality that addresses your deepest regret and for some strange collection of reasons this is a world where Hydra won.

So things have gotten pretty crazy.

What.

Huh. I might give it a chance after all. That sounds pretty interesing.

So, in this world, do the Avengers (and other important characters) exist in some capacity? Are they still alive? Not powered? Never existed in the first place?

So many questions.

So here we go:

Mad Scientist Holden Radcliffe created a virtual world called the Framework and basically put almost the entire AOS cast in there. In order to give everyone what they wanted, he decided he would take away one "regret" from each character — and Agent May's regret was that she had to kill an Inhuman child in 2008. So instead she saved the child and brought her back to America...where she ended up causing a much bigger incident called "the Cambridge Incident" which led to Hydra emerging from SHIELD and basically taking over America and making it a police state, with constant surveillance and state-sponsored Inhuman racism. Since the Cambridge Incident was around 2008 and 2009, however, it seems like Captain America was never defrosted; Nick Fury probably wasn't around to point Tony Stark in the right direction and save him from polonium poisoning; and Bruce Banner is probably in hiding or dead; Thor...no idea, he might be dead, too, considering it was SHIELD that found his hammer, so if in this timeline it was Hydra, they probably didn't let him go, but killed him instead; and Romanoff and Barton were both SHIELD agents, so they are either dead or in the Resistance. Oh yeah, and there's a Resistance.

Oh also the LMD that Radcliffe created, Aida, ended up killing Radcliffe while inserting him into the Framework (since he had essentially argued that their physical bodies didn't matter), then somehow she uploaded her own mind into the Framework in order to become the head of Hydra, Madame Hydra.

I know it's probably just for the promo, but I hope they use Come As You Are as a theme in the show itself.

Maybe even as the opening credits.

Being a fan of continuity is actually a really good reason to watch Ao S, because the show has apparently made it its mission to clear up continuity questions whenever and wherever possible. Plus, it gives you the whole backstory how the Avengers knew where Strucker went into hiding in Ao U.

Anyway, currently the show is pulling out all of the stops...and really, they should have never allowed the robot to read the evil magic book.

On the SHIELD Subreddit, they are basically saying that this is how The Flash should have dealt with "Flashpoint."

I stopped watching Agents of Shield mid-Season 3, but from what I've been hearing about Season 4, it sounds like they're following the same pattern as the old Star Trek movies: only the even numbered installments are good.

[up] Can't agree there....like, at all. I think it is a little bit a matter of taste. For example, a lot of people loved the Ghost Rider arc, but it wasn't really my cup of tea, but it was worth sticking around, because the LMD arc (to my own surprise) was and the current one is all kind of awesome. Though, it is not really flashpoint. It is more House of M.

And there is one thing you can trust in with Ao S: The pay off is always worth it!!! I mean, the two parter SOS was already one hell of a season finale, more a high budget TV movie than an actual episode...but season 3 went all out, with shotgun axe and all.

Not sure about the Young Adult label...Disney has a strange idea how shows for young adults should look like. Also, there is no mentioning of the Squirrel Girl's tail. Hopefully they don't skip it for budget reasons.

This doesn't really relate to the the TV show, but why do companies feel that adding "new" to a title makes it more interesting. It only makes it more confusing when referring to it years later. It's like "New Super Mario Bros.": it no longer feels new after four games.

She better have her tail, otherwise I'm rioting.

I love that there's a real life website for Colleen's dojo. Complete with crappy video ad.

When we're done, there won't be anything left.
