Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Oh, yeah, I saw something on Tumblr about that. That should be interesting....

Don't get too excited. Agents is in an arc where everyone's been put into the Matrix, basically. It's a VR simulation of a world where Hydra won. So she isn't real.

So does this mean certain people (like the Avengers) are dead, and so there's actually a good reason why they're not involved?

I mean, if we're going to argue that you shouldn't write dramatic world-saving plots if you can't afford to bring on RDJ or Chris Evans...well, I think that's silly.

Oh God! Natural light!

Probably either dead or completely different. Things are so different in the virtual world that many of the show's main characters are actually working for Hydra now. Phil Coulson is a schoolteacher who we see teaching a class on why Fantastic Racism is a good thing for you to have and you should totally hate and fear Inhumans. Some dead characters are alive inside the Matrix and some living characters are dead. It's like stepping into a parallel universe. But it's science.

The arc title, incidentally, is Agents of Hydra.

Honestly I can just recommend again to everyone to catch up on the show. What it is currently doing is all kinds of awesome....plus, this is most likely the closest we will ever come to the House of M storyline, since I doubt that they will do them on film anytime soon. Too complicated.

Yeah, I would highly recommend everyone watch this season. It's divided into three "pods" — the first eight episodes were the Ghost Rider arc, which was fantastic; the next arc was the LMD arc, which I actually found more interesting (and ended with a supremely awesome episode); and the next arc is called Agents of Hydra and looks to be insane.

Per that article Madame Hydra is played by Mallory Jansen, so I'm not sure if it's just Aida playing a role within the Framework or if Agnes (whom Aida was based on) was somehow recruited into Hydra this timeline.

I would prefer Aida.

Ironically, the Ghost Rider arc was one of my least fav of the show....But they really knock it out of the ballpark with the LMD arc.

I really liked the Ghost Rider arc despite its flaws, but the LMD one was fantastic too and delivered everything I wanted from an LMD story.

I think by cutting the season into three, Agents of SHIELD has actually done something the Netflix shows have yet to do: sustain momentum. I mean, it really does help that each arc is about eight episodes, because it allows them to introduce the new characters, build up the threat, and then resolve it in a reasonable amount of time — and then introduce a new threat for the next eight episodes.

I think Daredevil Season 2 tried this, dividing up the season into two arcs — the Punisher and then the Hand — but the Hand's arc was too nebulous and the villains weren't defined enough (and came out as way too much Yellow Peril-like) for it to be good, resulting in a season that had a great first half and a bad second half.

I stopped watching once they started doing all the robot stuff but I may have to check it out for the LMD stuff. To be fair Legion has made me lose interest in a lot of network TV's superhero offerings.

Legion is probably the best show on TV now — not just comic-related, but out of all shows. It's super innovative, super smart, funny, his interesting characters, great actors, and Aubrey Plaza. If you think that last point isn't a plus, just watch this clip (warning: spoilers? I guess? it's so random I don't know if it spoils anything).

What's Legion even about? All I've heard is that it's good (and that Aubrey Plaza is in it).

Legion's goddamn fantastic.

Long story short— it's about the world's most powerful mutant...who's also a schizophrenic. Anything more than that would be telling, I think.

The show's got a great stylized arthouse production to it. Think Wes Anderson and you'll have some idea. Clever visuals, awesome soundtrack, and can pull off horror and comedy within seconds of each other.

It's about a extremely powerful psychic with schizophrenia or something close to it.

Since the series is primarily told from his point of view, it has a disjointed, chaotic feel to it (in a good way) because the audience, much like the main character, is always trying to puzzle what is part of his imagination and what isn't.

It's a very clever show in all aspects, characterization, plot, the crazy visuals. It's also interesting seeing the mutant metaphor applied to mental illness, which may in fact be the most fitting metaphor.

[up]On a somewhat related albeit not quite as gonzo note, I loved Alphas, which was itself a walking Shout-Out to X-Men. Legion's first episode in particular reminded me a lot of that show, with its focus on the people behind the powers, and the mental and physical toll their abilities take on them, the way that manifests as various mental and emotional disorders. Miss that show.

Oh man, I thought the same. I really miss Alphas too. It was great in its concept of basically "down-to-earth X-men" (as in people's powers tend to be more lowkey and mundane, as well as having Reality Ensues applied to them). Legion serves as a more than satisfactory spiritual successor I guess.

Ao S was always very low on filler episodes, but with the three arc structure they really managed to create a constant momentum. The Ghost Rider Arc was a little bit slow, but once it took off, the show took off running and never stopped. And in terms of action, it is really up there. It is really impressive what the show manages on a TV budget. Extra-shot out for the special effects.

Eh, YMMV on that point. Pretty much the entire point of the Watchdogs is to be a filler arc in the background that shows up to take time away from the interesting plot. They're to this season what The Hand were to DareDevil's second season. It's just not as frustrating here as it was then because they have the courtesy not to take up the bulk of the plot, some of them have actual character to them, and they aren't an obnoxious racist stereotype.

On Episode 8 of Daredevil Season 2. The Hand finally show up and...yeah, just mooks with no personality. I kinda liked Stick's entire talk about the origins of The Hand and The Chaste, though. Gonna go into my full thoughts whenever I finish the season (which should be by the end of today, hopefully), but I'm more into the Punisher trial plotline. I mean, they bring in Clancy friggin' Brown into that one, the Kurgan himself.
