Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

[up][up]We have no idea. The animated Spider-Man movie definitely won't be MCU canon and it's been said Venom won't be, but it seems like a rather stupid decision for the live-action films.

Why would you make something conceivably at odds with your main series of films when they are meant to be spin-offs?

I think what they should do is hedge their bets. Make the spin-off be ambiguously set in the MCU but not quite. If it fails, "no it's not in the MCU just forget it existed". If it is, "Oh of course it is set in the MCU it always was."

Like, say, Doctor Strange is, broadly speaking, a film that (a few offhand references to Thor and the NY incident aside) could be set in an entirely different universe. Do something like that.

Spinoffs won't be connected to the mcu[1].

I don't think that the audience was meant to like Robyn....they seemed to target a mix of "yeah, I dislike her, but what happens to her is shitty nevertheless", but boy is the character annoying.

OK, I got to Simpson's last episode on the show, and I admit he was probably one of the better parts of the show. All around his descent into insanity was fun to watch. I've heard he's supposed to be a bit of a deconstruction of toxic masculinity?

[up] He is more a demonstration how much toxic masculinity is in our hero image. I mean, we should have been onto him the moment he told the story about his soldiers rescuing Barbie from her burning dreamhouse.

Mind explaining that in a bit more detail? Or, if you can, link to an article or something. I'm still kinda trying to understand this.

[up] Consider this: In the beginning he seems to do all the right things. He feels guilty, he wants to set things right aso. But if you really pay attention you realize that his heroism is entirely selfish and mostly connected to some sort of picture he has of himself as the big protector. Except that most of the audience most likely didn't and instead fell for this "nice" guy who spend hours sitting at a door and listening. But if he had really been a good guy, he wouldn't have gone back to Trish in the first place and had instead respected her wishes and understood her fear of him. This wasn't about Trish, it was only about him.

Damn, I like him as a villain a bit more now.

Yeah, like I could maybe give him a bit of leeway for going to Trish's apartment because he's ALSO in an emotionally fucked up state after being Kilgrave'd - feeling guilty in that situation and worrying about the victim, even selfishly, is a human enough reaction, especially in those circumstances. But only up until the point she told him to leave - if he had done so, then it would have proved he understood at least that much and that he to deal with his pain on his own. But instead he makes it entirely about himself and makes a point to stick around despite there being no excuse to not realize how afraid she must be of him after what happened.

[up] A little bit...the right approach would have been to write a letter imho, and leave it to her if and when or where she wants to contact him. And it doesn't stop there. From the get go, he is very aggressive towards Jessica, mostly because she doesn't see him as the hero he wants to be but a nuisance. She challenges his manly ego.

Everything Simmons does in the show is not about protecting the people, it is all about his own pride. As is the story about the dream house. Yeah, it sounds cute, but can you imagine how his sister must have felt that he burned down her dream house just so that he could feel like a hero for a moment?

Burning down the Dream House is a nice light (or not) Fridge Horror moment once you find out Will's whole deal. It's really the perfect metaphor for some gung-ho rah-rah save-the-day bullshit.

Vision on set of Infinity War[1]. Supposedly they're filming a scene that involves Tony, Nat, Vision, and Doctor Strange.

Well I finally got done watching Jessica Jones. I actually liked it a bit more than Daredevil season one, but I do admit it dragged slightly as it went on. The penultimate episode felt like one of the weakest ones because of just how badly the plot was being dragged out. At least with some of them, there were a couple redeeming qualities.

Still, it's a great show, lots of suspense, and (mostly) amazing writing.

I'll probably start on season two of Daredevil tomorrow.

@last page: Yo, Anomalocaris 20. Not cool bro. I made that exact same comparison a few weeks before Luke Cage even came out, almost word-for-word. Granted, the Luke Cage and Iron Fist parallels to Thor and Captain America are a lot more obvious now that they're out, and, as such, my observation of the trend was a bit incomplete, but you didn't even credit me with being the first person here to bring up the parallels between the Netflix shows and Phase 1 of the MCU movies.

[up]Whoops, my bad. I guess. My eidetic memory must be failing me if I've forgotten one of your forum posts from over half a year ago, of all things. Also you apparently own the concept making a post comparing two things, and I have unknowingly infringed upon your copyright. Do you want to settle out of court?

I demand Jen Walters, ASAP. One because she's the best and two because then she'd be in the MCU.

I like Jessica Jones better than Daredevil season 1 too, mostly because I like Jessica as a character way better. And Trish. I also think that it is thematically the strongest of the Netflix shows by a long shot. I think a lot of guys learned something about the "you should smile" line from this one.
