Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I'm glad it looks like Black Bolt may be the outlier.

...does the guy not know about his own contract? Or did he think he just got replaced and they were making Don Cheadle Thor now?

It's interesting to know because of that actually. Like, it's easy to assume every actor knows the plan for every film just because they work for the MCU, then it turn out they don't.

Contracts are a one-way street. Just because you sign a ten-picture contract with a studio doesn't mean they are actually obligated to put you in ten pictures. It just means you're obligated to show up for ten pictures if they call you.

MCU actors know somewhere between jack and shit about what's going on, sometimes literally only finding out what's happening to their characters when they arrive on set. So Hemsworth's reaction doesn't surprise me.

Marvel does its best to keep everything in a need to know basis. Consequently the actors are often in the dark about everything, unless they have to negotiate a new contract and insist on some information before signing.

I think it's to avoid leaking to the public. Too often an actor shares a picture in social media or told someone they trust who then told someone else and so on.

They did the same thing with the actors of Lost. I remember reading a story of one actor who finally bought a house in Hawaii (where the show was filmed) since he'd been there so long, and the next episode he filmed was the one were his character died.

Thankfully, enough shows are filmed in Hawaii these days that I think there are plenty of actors there that can get work. I know that Daniel Dae Kim didn't want to move away after Lost, so he got a role on Hawaii Five-Oh.

So, I am just taking a break after having seen the first six episodes of Iron Fist...which is kind of difficult to do, I really want to know what will happen next, but I wanted to put together a first impression based on what the reviewers have seen.

In short: The reviewers are right about it starting slow. They are also right about the hallway scene not working as well as in the other Netflix shows. I can also understand why some reviewers found Danny annoying....I don't feel the same way, but I can see cynic people seeing it this way (but that is an essay in and off itself).

Otherwise I can't disagree more with the reviews. Yes, the first three episodes could have easily been two episodes (they REALLY overuse the same set of flashbacks in the beginning), but once all relevant characters are introduced, the show takes off running. I think it does suffer a little bit from the Netflix setting - another channel would have allowed more comedic elements imho - but I really, really enjoy trying to figure out the different characters. You never know if a character is a villain, just an antagonist or perhaps not as bad at he seems to be. The show expertly sidesteps a number of clichés in this regard. And I also enjoy the majority of the fight scenes. They rarely overstay their welcome, but above all, I really like that Danny's movements aren't unnecessarily flashy. That one actually surprised me, because I felt that they didn't look very impressive in the trailers, but if you see the whole thing in context, the result is a very down to earth not one move too much fighting style of the kind we next to never get to see on the screen, where everyone feels the need to flip and flop around.

Would you say it starts slower than Luke Cage did? 'Cause that show really frustrated me with how long it took for Luke to actually do anything.

Wait, what? Luke was fighting to protect to protect Harlem by the time the second episode began. How did he take a long time to do anything? Because that's certainly not how the show went.

Luke's big contribution in the second episode was a delivering a message to Cottonmouth on behalf of Pops, and even that he had to be pressured into doing.

Yeah, it isn't really until Pops dies that he actually starts kicking names and taking ass. That being said, I did enjoy its start. I'm pretty patient when it comes to buildup, and it helped establish Luke as a normal person before establishing him as a superhero, which is an important order to do things in when your character doesn't want to be a superhero.

Anyway, I watched the first episode of Ferrous Balled Forelimb Extremity, and I'm finding it enjoyable so far. I can already tell I'm gonna like Colleen (as most people seem to do in the reviews), and I actually enjoy the corporate intrigue. I just hope the fight scenes pick up the pace a little, I'm a sucker for flashy fights (which is why Daredevil is still my favorite so far).

You can't really compare this....mostly because in the beginning, there isn't really someone for Danny to fight for. But he isn't as inactive as Luke either. I can say that overall the slow pace in Iron Fist feels very deliberate...it is not like Luke Cage, where it often seemed as if the show made a detour to fill some time before the next pivotal moment. Or like Daredevil when the show is meandering around with the hero running left and right but no real purpose attached to it.

Oooo. His Lex Luthor on Smallville was amazing. I'm so glad to see we've got him in the MCU now.

Clickbait. If you ask me, Tony will be the one who either dies or retires and Steve will be around for a long, long time. But I don't want to know it anyway. It will be better to go into Avengers 4 without knowing which actors agreed to a new contract.

I don't see Tony going anywhere voluntarily. He's as much a Winter Soldier as Cap is. He's just more loathe to admit it because he's a Knight in Sour Armor.

Tony will never quit until he is satisfied that the world will be in safer hands than his own. And Tony will never find hands that he's willing to consider safer than his own.
