Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

I needs some PR training.
Still excited about the show, though. I really need some distraction, because in my circle of friends there was just a very sudden and totally unexpected dead. I am just back from the funeral and I honestly really look forward to the opportunity to distract myself this weekend by delving into a new show. If nothing else, Iron Fist might give me some new dates for my time-line.

No, my point is that I don't think people are done with heroic white billionaires. I think people just didn't like the first six episodes of Iron Fist.
And also, Batman does share some of the problematic elements of Iron Fist and Dr Strange. I think someone here pointed out that Batman Begins Batman basically has Dr. Strange's origin.
He gets less flak over it because maybe he has enough other stuff going on or maybe because he's grandfathered far up the clause.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersSorry for your loss, Swanpride.
PFFT
People can't empathize with rich white billionaires? Then explain Tony Stark.

Well, to be fair, Tony had to get waterboarded while having a car battery stuck in his chest so that the audience would be unable to deny him sympathy. And it is actually true that Batman and Oliver Queen have both come under more scrutiny lately, though Batman a little bit more, because more and more people have started to think about the question why he doesn't use all his wealth to make Gotham less of a sh... hole. Put all the money he spends on gadgets in social programs and you have less of a problem. Oliver actually has the "got tortured for years" excuse and by the time season 2 rolled around a lot of people felt that he was acting like a spoiled brat.
So, I actually think that there is some truth to the idea that currently people have a hard time to sympathize with millionaires. But that is the job of the writers, to ensure that the audience connects with Iron Fist nevertheless. Which, in a way, shouldn't be that difficult...I mean, imagine you come home after years in a foreign culture, looking forward to see your old friends which used to be your quasi siblings, and instead of finding any welcome, you are treated like a pariah....that has to hurt. Question is if they allow Danny Rand to actually grief about any of this on screen. Taking the cypher approach is always dangerous when introducing a new character - I remember how much I hated it that Elementary started out with two characters who were hinted to have a number of secrets, because I had trouble to find a Po V character to latch onto. But then, if everything fails, there is always Claire to carry me through the show....
Lego Batman is more a riff on the character, though. It follows different rules than a straight adaptations.
Btw, does anyone know who the actual writers of the show are? I can find the name of the show runner and the director, but on of the writers.....same for Inhumans.

Last I checked people still seemed pretty stoked about Batman. And Lego Batman being a spoof is kind of irrelevant since the movie still assumes the audience has familiarity with Batman. It is very much an Affectionate Parody.

I'm sorry, Swanpride.
And ease off, Finn. Stop grasping for excuses and let it be what it is. One person can spark an avalanche of public opinion but not hold back the flood, to mix the hell out of a metaphor.
Yeah, isn't it strange how people loved white billionaires before, and hate them now? I mean, it's not like Trump manufactured an entirely disingenuous man-of-the-people image as part of his campaign, or anything.

Thanks, you all.
I think we have established now that he is really, really bad in handling the press and all the attention. Plus, he already jinked it, with his "it's for the fans" line.
Still, I am withholding judgement concerning the actual quality of the show until enough people have seen the whole thing.
If people are capable of drawing any parallels between your character and a dayglo hefty bag full of horse turds and confederate flags, then the political climate is really not the problem, and you should not have written that freaking character.
It's sorta like blaming Hitler for people not liking your characters going around gassing gay people and gypsies.
Yeah, all in all, Finn's just deflecting criticism in a really stupid way. People don't hate white billionaires. People hate Trump, but not because he's white and/or a billionaire.
People will continue to root for white billionaires as long as those billionaires are presented as kind-hearted, generous, and self-sacrificing figures. If anything, the opposite trend is true; people sympathize with guys like Trump where they really shouldn't, because they assume he's like a real-life Bruce Wayne ready to stomp out crime with his kind heart and infinite wealth.

That's a weird stance to take...
