Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

If Sakaar is a nexus of the universe where all the garbage from portals ends up, I hope we get a brief shot of a red skeleton ontop of a landfill.

First look at Crystal. Less boring than Black Bolt thankfully.

I watched Dr. Strange a second time, 'cause my parents had never seen it yet. The fights are still super underwhelming.

Basically, yeah. Dr. Strange fights the same as Black Panther, who fights the same as Black Widow, who fights the same as Captain America. It's the same pseudo-not-kung-fu-not-MMA-sometimes-with-weapons.

Doctor Strange doesn't really fight all that much...most of the time he is too busy running and bargaining. His cloak has more fight time than he has.

It might even be the same type of thing, it just doesn't have pieces missing because HYDRA didn't get a chance to cut at this one. Hopefully it doesn't lead to the same place, though.

I doubt it...the monolith in Ao S was a deliberate reference to 2010 a Space Odyssey, so it looked pretty much like that one with the top broken off. This one has an entirely different shape and isn't quite as pitch black.

I have my doubts about that connection too, but more because I'm not sure how much faith I have in intercontinuity in the MCU at the moment than because of how it looks. It's a big (prop) block of black stone— for all we know the monolith from AOS could be any shape and still have the same properties. Plus it's not lit for filming in that shot (and/or recoloured in post-production), so who knows how black it's supposed to be onscreen.

[up] True.

At this point I just assume that there won't be any references which would be okay with me as long as they don't contradict Ao S. This way I will be more exited if there are any after all.

Maybe Gamora can hang onto that name and use it for her recreational alfalfa patch or something.

...although the more I think about it, the more it kinda sounds like a space brothel.

Iron Fist's Finn Jones blames Donald Trump over IF's bad reviews.

Errrrrrrr, I don't want to come off as a Trump supporter (the things I've been hearing about him don't fill me with enthusiasm), but is it really the wisest idea to blame him for these supposed bad reviews?

(I read that Iron Fist is getting bad reviews, but I didn't read said reviews on account of how I want to judge it by actually watching it myself. When it comes out. Which should be in a few days.)

[up]Why didn't he just say that the second half is better? Stop shooting yourself in the foot dude. All the reviews imply episode 6 is leading to the good stuff but that's where the reviews stop hence the enormous negativity.

It's especially stupid because he's all saying that Trump makes it hard for people to empathize with rich white billionaires, and that's what he's blaming the bad reviews on, when... that's not what the reviews were solely complaining about? They were complaining about bad pacing and plotting and acting and fight scenes and other stuff.

[up] He really should just think a little maybe before saying things. All he had to say was that the reviewers haven't seen the whole series yet, which is true, and that they may have a different opinion when the whole series comes out.
