Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Why would Mephisto be Thanos's right hand bad guy?
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Yes. Likely as a minion. Not a literal devil/Dimension Lord. One is easy to handwave away with "He's an alien who works for Thanos." The other requires a whole backstory in itself.

Wouldn't it make more sense to use someone like Corvus Glaive? True, he's a newer character, but he'd fit the "minion of Thanos" role perfectly well.
Not to mention that I believe Avengers Assemble ended up using the Black Order, so it's not like they've never been used outside of comics.

Oh God! Natural light! You need to have his minions betray him, and "he's the devil" is a pretty handy way of explaining betrayal without making the character in any way sympathetic. Besides, if he was just a minion of Thanos who wouldn't impact the plot, he wouldn't be forced by Marvel into not saying anything more.
I don't know why you think the devil is something they have to set up and establish. He's the devil. We know who he is.
BAHHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
I'm sorry. This is Marvel. Everything is a secret and guarded.
It is pretty much a meme at this point that fans hype up every secretive actor part as a huge, majorly important character from the comics, only for it to almost always be a far lesser character than they were anticipating.

If you needed a character to betray him, Ebony Maw could do it - he's done so in the past.
Though I'm wondering if Loki might end up playing a Wild Card role somehow.
In any case, why do his minions needed to betray him?

Oh God! Natural light!Look, that's the Simpsons. It is a decidedly different beast.
I think the MCU - which has tried to be somewhat grounded, even if they are willing to go to weirder places - going "SUDDENLY SATAN!" with no hint that such a person existed would be...kind of weird. Such a major figure, introduced as Thanos's minion no less, would feel very weird, and I think he simply ought to be built up more if they did use him.
In any case, you did not answer my question: why do Thanos's allies need to betray him?

Oh God! Natural light! If the movie were a comedy running on Rule of Funny the example would work, I guess.
They actually would need to spend the time to establish Mephisto, despite basically just being the Judeo-Christian Devil. They would need to do that because, as the Judeo-Christian Devil, his sudden involvement means you need to flesh out what that actually means for the established cosmology.
Satan might be a character who is instantly familiar to a lot of people, but that still doesn't mean he can just pop up and go, "Hey," with no explanation. Neither can Sherlock Holmes. Or Dracula. Or Darth Vader. Just because the character's well-known doesn't mean you can skip establishing how and why they're here or what it means to the world that's been crafted.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.You know if they decided to establish Star Wars and the MCU as taking place in the same universe, it would be insane, nonsensical, and kind of dumb, but I'd watch the heck out of it.
This song needs more love.I half wonder how the power levels would stack up.
Goodishly, I suspect.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersI suspect the MCU's projectile speed is a bit too fast for Star Wars to keep up with. Blaster bolts are slow as shit.
Have you seen a repulsor fire? Shit hits instantly. Try blocking that with a lightsaber.

Probably worth noting she might not have gone to Sakaar on purpose and could be in hiding from someone on Sakaar now that she's stranded there.
