Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

That leaves us with them not being able to do that, which, if you can steal Hulk when no-one knows where he is despite every organisation on the planet looking for him and being unable to find him, and with Hulk being Hulk, I still don't buy
...Huh? Are you saying that Thanos stole the Hulk? Because I'm pretty sure that's not the case. In any case, we have no idea how the wormholes work, all we know is that they dump stuff into Sakaar. So if we don't know how the wormholes work, either it will be explained in the movie or nobody knows how they work, therefore they would be useless to Thanos. He doesn't want a bunch of garbage.

Either they open randomly and one just happened to get Hulk, which is an absolutely gigantic contrivance, or one was purposefully opened to abduct Hulk, which leads to the exact same problem.

They're either random and its poorly written BS, or its directed and its BS Thanos hasn't tried to take it.

How would Thanos take it? How can one take a wormhole?

Also, you are presuming a bit much from Thanos, the dude who still hasn't retrieved the Infinity Stone on Earth, the one that he knows is there.

Something that I suppose is that Thanos going to be like "the Frieza" or the Cthulhu of Marvel studios movies.

At first he is considered "the strongest of the universe", but then it turns out that there are beings much more powerful than him. (As the celestials or Dormammu)

[up] But that was always the case. It was never said that Thanos was the most powerful being in the MCU.

Man, accidentally falling into wormholes and ending up on a microverse and romancing a green woman is just how Hulk's life goes

Also its weird to be getting angry about it so early on

The movie isn't even out yet, why is this such a big deal when we don't even know what the heck is going on with that plot?

[up]Most ambitious.

As for the Hulk, he could have been doing anything. Does Marvel or Fox have the rights to Alpha Flight? Maybe he was being chased by them.

[up][up][up][up][up][up]Something is causing them to open at will, so take control of that. Besides, he had a plan for retrieving the earths stones - Loki, then Ultron. Now both have failed, only now is he going to sort it out personally.

[up][up][up][up]Dormamu was only defeated by being annoyed into going away. and yes, they have stated that Thanos is the most powerful being in the MCU. Korath explicitly says so in Guardians Of The Galaxy.

Something is causing them to open at will, so take control of that.

And what if that isn't possible?

We have provided numerous possible explanations, Pincer, and you have ignored them. Meanwhile, you're basing your arguments on assumptions and conjecture, with no hard facts. Why don't you just wait for the movie to offer an explanation before assuming that they have none?

Korath isn't really the strongest source in the universe. He's a mid-level muscle for a terrorist, not a multdimensional scholar.

[up][up][up][up]Then logically Thanos sucks compared to whoever can control it, so why are we scared of him when Hulk and Thor alone could beat the crap out of whoever was powerful enough to control the wormholes.

[up][up]I'm pretty sure if there was a being more powerful than Thanos in the known universe, people in the universe spanning connected systems would have freaking heard about them.

[up][up] What makes you think that Thor and Hulk will be fighting them? How do you know that they won't just escape some other way?

Anyway, I'd argue that if there is a being more powerful than Thanos in the universe, then they probably keep to themselves.

...the simple fact that the guy who already kidnapped Hulk without Hulk being able to stop him doing it, doesn't just turn around and do it again as soon as he notices Hulk is gone.

If the obstacle is "guy who can kidnap you instantly across infinite space", just running away is not a solution.

You are making so many assumptions about what is allegedly happening in this film. What, did you find an alleged leaked script on 4chan or something?

Yeah, let's complain about imagined plot holes in a movie that hasn't come out yet. Because that's a worthwhile use of your time and everyone else's.

I imagine Thanos in his power base will be on the same level as Odin, and with the Infinity gauntlet with the gems will be more powerful than the Celestials and Dormammu.

Lets instead complain that Malekith was already used so we can't have a scene where Hela meets with him in a dark alley because he's her illegal soul dealer

Just open his big ol coat that he wears over his elf tights and go 'mortal souls, nice and fresh'

Also non-negotiable, Hela needs a boat made out of toenails

Speaking of Malekith (because Loki totally stole his signature weapon, amongst other things), whatever happened to the Casket of Ancient Winters?

True, it can't be that simple.

But I do think we should consider that they might end up finding a way to avoid capture.

Granted, I'm speculating, but that's all we can do at this point - speculate. We know very little, so we shouldn't act like we know everything.
