Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I thought that was, like, months ago? And isn't it now a bit hypocritical, considering that he is thinking of directing Suicide Squad 2?

Allegedly, he's only interested in Suicide Squad because he's wanted to work with Will Smith for years.

Regardless, it's sort of irrelevant now since his comments were from November. Who cares at this point?

Unless they decide to switch around some character traits.

Underwater karate could be kind of badass.

I honestly don't care about people getting all snobby about the MCU. It's just jealously that Marvel and Disney are raking in all the money in the world. We will see in around 30 to 40 years which movies will still have an audience and which ones will be forgotten.

I don't care about whatever that sexist anti-Semite Mel Gibson has to say about anything, to be honest.

Have you any dreams you'd like to sell?

Speaking as someone who missed Gibson's comments when they were still current, what did he say about the MCU exactly?

You can read them yourself. He is basically complaining that Marvel movies are more violent than his (not true), but you don't give a shit about the characters (also not true). It's a stupid statement from someone who made Passion of the Christ, which was 90% violence to a character I have no attachment towards.

Depends on how you define violence. In terms of explicitness, absolutely not. Put in terms of total number of people killed or blows exchanged, quite possibly.

Like, I remember seeing a study that tried to quantify violence in children's cartoons, and the determined that Foghorn Leghorn cartoons were the most violent, because there'd be scenes in his cartoons where he was repeatedly shoving someone, like a dozen times in the span of a couple seconds, and each individual shove was counted as an act of violence.

The actor who played Ryu in the 1994 movie actually played Yao-Fei in Arrow, so he's part of the Arrowverse.

Well, I just saw doctor strange and....yeah, it wasnt really my cup of tea.

I mean i like the visual, the place, Mordo acting an tilda make a good ancient one but the rest.....meh: the visial while good feel a little bit colect for other movies like warcraft, inception or Matrix so I dont feel so blow away as I should be, the villian is somehow even MORE forgettable than the Antman one which is a pretty damn feat to acomplish, they are another issues like Strange skepticism in word were Thor is a fact sound way to weird.

Also I have one questions: when Wong mention the books Strange is reading, he said astronomia nova, the key of salomon and...the book fo the invisible sun? probably mishearing ether way, just asking
