Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I was hoping for Matt Bomer...he can act so well with just his eyes.

A Black Panther set photo[1], possibly set somewhere in Wakanda.

[up][up] Apparently it's an actor named Anson Mont (name sounds familiar to me). From the popularity of the Vince Diesel casting as well as other stuff, my impression was that the character was nonwhite, but it might be one of those ambiguous drawing things.

On another topic, I had thought there was a new GOTG 2 trailer today. Did it not come out yet?

And it looks kinda like the outfit of the Midnight Angels too, which is cool.

I'm gonna guess, judging from this trailer, that Yondu is gonna be going back and forth as to whether or not he's helping them or out for his own personal profit until the third act.

Have you any dreams you'd like to sell?

Drax's lines are immaculately delivered, I gotta give him that. And Gamora and Neb got some characterization in this one! She says hi to Baby Groot in the middle of a firefight! And Rocket has a sick-ass dart trap! If they haven't put all the best parts of this movie in the trailers already, this is gonna be incredible. Frankly it's going to be pretty excellent even if they did.

The way Chris Pratt introduced the trailer was funny, too.

The Chain by Fleetwood Mac. From Rumours, which is basically one of the best classic rock albums of all time.

Is she any good? I remember her being on Smallville years ago but I'm not familiar with her outside of that.

So that makes what, the second DC actor snatched by the MCU?

Off the top of my head there's Natalie Portman, Josh Brolin, Zoe Saldana, Idris Elba, Djimon Honsou and Tilda Swinton.

I know there's hairdye and it would be ridiculous for them not to make her a redhead because literally that's the crux of her design, but I'm a bit disappointed they didn't cast a natural one.

Well I know it fits in with the trend of no (natural) red-headed characters, but from the pictures I've seen of her, Medusa's hair often doesn't seem like a normal red color anyway (and it's you know, alive). So, an unrealistic dyed red would actually be a good choice. Which is to say that the actual hair color of the actress probably doesn't matter much.

What DC movies were Saldana and Elba in?

Both of them were in The Losers, which was based on a Vertigo comic (a really great Vertigo comic). So was Chris Evans, before he was Cap.
