Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Thanos saying "Nope".

I wouldn't be surprised if he does it and Thanos just literally punches a hole through the dimension and escapes right after.

When everyone's like "HOW?" he just says "NANOMACHINES, SON". Or maybe "SUCH IS THE POWER OF THE POWER STONE".

"All you Fascists bound to lose."

The Ancient One did say that they use the Mirror Dimension to contain certain threats. I assume they just don't bother half the time because most of their adversaries can escape too.

I mean, if Thanos has the Power Stone or the Reality Stone, that's pretty much a guarantee that he can escape the Mirror Dimension.

So that's means that Strange will not get in action before Thanos gets one of those.

But really, it would be awesome if he gets out of that dimension by willpower alone.

Strange is a Squishy Wizard with very breakable hands. He should be easy picking.

That does come from WWH though, perhaps comic's strongest example of The Worf Effect, where the entire Earth is worfed for the Hulk.

I do think Thanos will one-shot half of the Avengers when he appears so we get something like him breaking out of the mirror dimension on sheer willpower and hurling Hulk away with a single punch then destroying Iron Man's armor with a snap of his fingers and doing a No-Sell on Thor's Mjolnir before punching him so hard he becomes a redhead, cracking Captain's shield in half with a single punch, e.t.c e.t.c

Well the broken shield at least has been foreshadowed.

And its always the 'hohshit' moment, the shield breaking

The big mirror dimension fight indicates that people of sufficient power can warp and manipulate the dimension on unexpected scales. Even more impressive than simply escaping, Thanos collapsing the mirror dimension itself would be insane.

Strange has a history of that in general though whenever he's involved in crossovers. He's Marvel's Zatanna and as such usually has some sort of Drama-Preserving Handicap happen to him so he doesn't solve the issue at hand in 20 seconds.

That's why when they actually had him officially join the Avengers for real, it was only after subjecting him to a storyline where he lost the Sorcerer Supreme title and had his powers greatly nerfed as a result.

I had wondered if they would bring Garret back at least for a cameo, but if his health was compromised, most likely not...but if they did manage to film his scenes beforehand, it would be a heartbreaking good-bye.

We're getting an entire movie of T Hanos beating the hell out of the heroes one by one. Why do you think its Infinity War part 1 and 2? You think they're going to get to halfway through and say "Y'know what, lets take a break while half the universes population is dead to check out this Wasp and Black Panther adventure".

The basic idea is that Thanos takes down the Nova Corps, Vision, Dr. Strange, the Asgardians, the Collecter, and whoever has the Soul Stone individually, but leavs them alive mainly cause he doesn't want to even bother killing them. When he is done, he assembles the gauntlet, then sends an invitation to all the people he humiliated to come and fight him - once he has destroyed all of the heroes, then he will use the gauntlet to enact his tribute to sweet death.

As for trapping him in the mirror dimension, doesn't Thanos have magic?

I mean... I would definitely still watch that.

Wait, you're probably talking about their individual films. So I will get to. EVERYONE IGNORE ME.

If only this weren't impossible due to rights disputes— I want a Deadpool/Squirrel Girl (and the GLA, if possible) crossover that shows what they were doing during Infinity War (because of course they were there, obviously, they were just cut out of the movie) and how Squirrel Girl beat Thanos, and how Death likes Deadpool better.

[up][up][up]Black Panther is before Infinity War. As for your question, I'm pretty sure that's why it's no longer titled Part I and Part II and why they keep stressing it's two separate movies. My guess is the first installment ends with the Vision killed so Thanos can get the Mind Stone.

I thought that Deadpool was flat terrified of Squirrel Girl cause she threatened to let Monkey Joe have a go at his nuts.

[up]Fine, Captain Marvel. And of course it won't end on him killing half the universe, that would make the tone of the next two movies schizophrenic. It will end with Thanos having beaten all of them and inviting them to come and fight him with the power of the stones. Sort of an "I beat you when you had the stones, now lets see if you can beat me" thing.
