Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

And that's what the framework is about, right? No regrets, a supposedly happy (or perhaps not so happy) live for everyone.... To me it sounds like the basic idea behind House of M.

I wonder who was responsible for cinematography and camera work in this episode...this is stunningly staged. Either Jed has a better sense for stuff like this than Joss has, or he had someone really good working with him.

@comicwriter: Was that video part of the Doctor Strange featurettes?

Either Jed has a better sense for stuff like this than Joss has, or he had someone really good working with him.
It looks like he learned a lot from watching Joss and Kevin Tanchareon work — he said that he did some second unit directing during season three's "Spacetime" (another episode that had beautiful cinematography). He also said that the action shots during that fight scene took two days to film.

Also cool: the ending shot of the Triskelion is the exact same model as the one ILM did for Winter Soldier — ILM gave it to the Fuse FX, the company that works with Agents of SHIELD.

[up] Damnit, why did it took so long for him directing himself? I wish we would have gotten more episodes from him.

I especially loved the details...like showing the snow at the start of the episode, and then having it all falling down when the hangar opens. Or setting up the fire early on, so that it can later serve as a backdrop for the fight scene, which looked double impressive with all the light and shadow playing into it.

You are right, Spacetime is another episode which really stood out visually.

If you've never directed anything, it's intimidating to do it, especially something effects heavy and fight-heavy as Agents of SHIELD is.

The first episode that Joss Whedon directed was the first season finale of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, "Prophecy Girl." It was probably the best episode of the season, but he waited until there was an entire season already filmed before directing.

Some funny, is that for a moment I thought Aida was an example of Ignored Enamored Underling, but was jossed in this episode.

I was thinking about Thor: Ragnarok and how odd it was that Skurge is in the movie without Amora. Then I remembered that the first appearance of Valkyrie was actually Enchantress in disguise, so it's possible that Valkyrie will be a Composite Character, or even that the movie adapts that story and reveals that Valkyrie was the Enchantress the whole time, with the potential for an actual Valkyrie, of course.

[up]Would you mind spoilering that? It's too late for me, but as someone who's not that familiar with Thor, I kind of wish I could've gone in without knowing that possibility, especially if it ends up being true. Edit: Thanks.

It was from an Avengers issue. It was kind of dumb or maybe hilarious and dumb.

[up]Hey, the Thomas-Buscema Avengers run is just classic after classic. "The Name is Yellowjacket", "Behold the Vision", "Death Be Not Proud", the one where the Zodiac holds Manhattan hostage, the one where the Squadron Supreme have to stop a deformed child prodigy from destroying their world...

Make mine Marvel.

Those darn bizarro genius babies. Always causing trouble.

Still though "Come On In... The Revolution's Fine" is not the best in the run.

I genuinely hope not, at least in the "Composite Character" part.

It is enough with the Race Lift of Valkyria, I dont' want a Race Lift for The Enchantress, also.

If your theorie turned be right, then her true form must be a beautiful blonde

What's wrong with racelifting both of them?

  • It is an artificial way of including minorities.
  • They do not resemble the character at all.

Right, because Idris Elba totally looks like Heimdall in the comics.

The appearance of Heimdall hardly matters, while in the case of The Enchantress is an aspect very important for her character.

It's not important. If she's black, who cares. They can retcon it where she's not related to Lorelei for all I care. It's not a big deal to racelift her.

Under that logic, Black Panther, War Machine and Luke Cage can be interpreted by white men, because according to you, the race or the apparence doesn't matter.

Don't take my words and twist them. There's already a ton of white characters in the comics, making them black isn't a big deal. It'd be stupid to racelift Black Panther and Luke Cage to be white, but taking a white character and racelifting them when we already have a shit ton of white characters isn't a big deal.

[up][up]Race is an important part of those characters' stories.

As far as The Enchantress goes, the important aspect of her appearance is that she's hot, and uh.... there's no reason why being black should be considered an impediment to that.

If you wanted them to look like the original characters, you'd have a Wolverine who is actually short, a Hawkeye with a mask, a white Heimdall, a white Valkyrie, a white Baron Mordo, a white Electra, and a red haired Scott Lang.
