Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Ultron was something of a perfect storm of the alien AI of the staff and the programming Tony was trying to create. If we were to balance it, you could say that the "intelligence" comes from the staff, the personality and desires come from Tony's work, and the insanity and incoherence in his thought process comes from the fact that - despite his systems ultimately managing an interface after a million and one tries - the two really just don't run well together.

Though presumably if Tony had been able to monitor the process, Ultron could've ended up more like vision. In true dramatic fashion, his systems only got the hook-up running the moment he left the room and stopped paying attention to his system.

No, the reason the process worked was because Tony (and Bruce) left the room. The AI in the staff saw an opportunity to attack and took it. That's why Tony keeps saying "We were nowhere close!"

I guess that's possible. But a lot about how that all worked was entirely unexplored. It could also have been that the Tony and co. gave up too early and thus allowed the process to become corrupted by their inaction - which also makes sense, given that later on they're able to positively replicate it with Vision without any problems whatsoever.

That's actually one of my big gripes about the movie. Basically everything about how much of an effect the Mind Stone itself (and/or Thanos) had on Ultron's creation is left blank, to be inferred by the fans rather than implied by the actual movie. If not for the scene with Thanos after the credits, with a vague line that implied he had a hand in things all along, it would've easily just been an average A.I. Is a Crapshoot plot, and even that scene doesn't explain anything as much as raise further questions.

Even the idea that the Mind Stone AI had a will at all is more developed by the fans than the movie itself. I'm inclined to believe, it but less because the movie itself makes any effort to introduce the idea itself and more because I remember Marvel pulling the same kind of crap with their plot building in Iron Man 3.

The way Tony described it as the program within the stone was a base template they could do whatever they wanted with. So he downloaded the program to be merged with the Ultron program he was already working on. The Vision was created because they decided to do the same thing except with JARVIS and the original program within the stone, which is why the others were opposed to it. That part is fairly well spelled out. Other questions on that line are mostly fan speculation or just necessary plot contrivances, like why Ultron emerged already blended with the Ultron program and not Mind Stone AI(1), or why they left the downloading function on continuous repeat, letting them be gone when it succeeded.

[up][up] The face looks terrible (it looks too masculine even for Carol and doesn't look like Brie Larson at all) and the boots have WAY too many strap but overall good concept art.

Well, I don't think he was trying to draw Brie Larson, personally, nor do I think that the face looks especially masculine. I'd actually say that many of McKelvie's faces are rather androgynous in general, but I wouldn't call that "masculine".

I'm not seeing her face as especially masculine but those boots do have a lot of straps

And I'll miss the sash but it's a good belt

I've always found McKelvie's faces less androgynous and more just Uncanny Valley. Also he tends to draw bodies kinda lumpy and stiff looking. Not a big fan. His design skill is OK if a little on the bland side. I just don't think his art style is good for carrying them because of it.

New Iron Fist featurette:

I really hope that Shou Lao doesn't get Adapted Out. Having a dragon fight in a flashback would be quite the "Holy shit!" moment.

Is it just me or does Finn Jones' voice get a bit weird in places? Like they spliced audio from an alternate take of the interview?

By the way, for anyone who doesn't want Agents of SHIELD, they just had one of their best episodes ever and then dropped the fucking mic. The next episode is in goddamn April though.

This episode was all kind of amazing....the best I have seen in the winter season by far. The wait will be terrible.

Aida is practically what Ultron could have been.....

After this episode, there is no doubt in my mind that Ao S is one of the best shows which EVER aired. If this is really its last season (please, no), it might eventually become a cult classic along the lines of Firefly and Babylon 5, forever mourned as one of those shows which never get the love and appreciation it deserved when it was still on air.

Too bad that Netflix Germany doesn't have Ao S, and the episodes aren't all available to buy yet....I would love to do a marathon watch in preparation for those last episodes.

I never read House of M. Mind walking me through the logic? I thought it was just a storyline where Wanda's family is royalty.

Maybe we should have this discussion in the AoS thread, but if we have it here, don't forget spoiler tags.

House of M was basically "Wanda fucks with reality so everyone's dream comes true". So mutants rule the world and humans are the underclass because that's Magneto's dream, and so on.

This place is careless.

Speaking of Aida.

She turned out to be an example of The Starscream.

It could be said that we can eliminate loyalty as a redeeming quality.
