Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Honestly, they should have put a whiskey bottle in Jessica's hand. But I guess this would have caused protest. Because it is totally okay to sell toys with weapons, but not to refer to the alcoholism of a character.

[up] Mockingbird has her batons which would make for a cool toy, and Daisy has her special gloves.

I'm just hoping we get some variation of this.

I think I read somewhere that if you want to work at the scripts, you need a special password to access it in the first place, and if you think about a line too long, you are shut out immediately due to inactivity, meaning that you have to unlock it again.

It's one of the reasons why I will never believe a script league. There are official state documents which aren't as well protected as those scripts.

"Well he actually isn't a human. He's a robit. But probably can't do that because Ultron was the first true AI."

But he wasn't. Jarvis was. Like, Jarvis was a fully functional artificial intelligence with fully developed personality, logic, capacity for emotion and everything you'd need to consider an AI a real AI. Ultron was just bigger, an AI capable of .... something, that script was really poorly written for why they couldn't just pour Jarvis into a bunch of Iron Man suits and have him do the House Party thing instead of getting Ultron.

And no-one ever freaked out or even really cared about Jarvis. Even Stane didn't comment on him despite everyone knowing about him. T He arc reactor was Tony's major breakthrough, not JARVISD, indiciating that AI is relatively well known and not something that didn't exist pre Ao U.

Jarvis was a Virtual Intelligence.

Weird but true.

He fought Ultron independently while he was under attack. Tony didn't program him to do that, its a new strategy and response formed after unforseen actions come out. Thats how we define a real intelligence.

But the fact that Jarvis did that came as a surprise to Tony, so it may have been a case of Jarvis being more advanced then his programmer realized.

Jarvis may have been a liminal case.

He was originally just supposed to be a voice user interface but he takes on more duties and abilities until he's commanding the Iron Legion and keeping Ultron from the launch codes.

Might be a case like Mega Man vs Mega Man X.

[up]x5

Also, there's nothing to indicate that Jarvis is capable of emotions, and his parameters on logic and his own personality were developed by Tony. Ultron developed his personality and logic all by himself (notice how the first non-A.I. person he ever had some sort of interaction with was with Tony).

It's unfair to call Ultron artificial intelligence. He was kind of an idiot.

He was two days old too.

Age of Ultron, more like Temper Tantrum of Baby Ultron.

Have you any dreams you'd like to sell?

One of the first things he did upon waking up is go on the internet, of course he became an idiot.

He didn't get programmed. He just came pre-programmed on the stick.

The entirety of the plot of Age of Ultron is essentially someone getting a virus off of a USB they found in the parking lot and plugged into their machine. Only with more flying cities.

Jarvis was a Virtual Intelligence.
Actually, his name stands for Just A Rather Very Intelligent System.

Is there a trope name for that? Where the heroes take something of the villains and, in lieu of doing something sensible, hook it up directly to their system with no firewalls or protection and unleash a virus? It happened here and in Skyfall as well.

"Holy shit that's true"

I mean, you would think two programmers who are fully aware that there is a huge program active on the stick that was previously owned by the god of trickery, might, MIGHT, be a hostile program.

Probably because he was already causing the chaos Thanos wanted; why would the staff make him suspicious by mind-controlling people or building a body for itself?

Writing a post-post apocalypse LitRPG on RR. Also fanfic stuff.

Yeah. But what I'm saying is in fairness to Tony.

He wouldn't know that. And he had a fear vision of an alien invasion. Not the robot uprising.
