Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I always thought that the time travellers overlapped a lot with Chase's parents who are just more generic mad scientists.

I honestly don't get the hatred for the Inhumans aside from "They are not the X-men"...when it comes to the MCU, that is a good thing, because they don't bring the baggage of "somehow heroes like the Avengers are okay but mutants are hunted by the society and the government" baggage with them.

Still no word on Old Lace

Say, that's right.

If they leave Old Lace out of it, then 0/10, worst show of the year. I mean, why in the world would you pass up the chance to have a dinosaur in your story?

Joking aside, though, I could see that CGI being difficult to pull off on a TV show's budget. I suppose if it's a choice between leaving her out of it, or having incredibly obvious and jarring CGI in every scene, maybe the former would be preferable?

Still hope they're able to do it, though.

Animatronics, goddamn it.

I wouldn't be surprised if this series doesn't have the budget for CG or animatronics, but it's a pet peeve of mine that CG has supplanted a lot of these tried-and-true special effects methods that are honestly way better now than when they were in common use.

That being said— Karolina and Old Lace are the two big things I can imagine eating into their effects budget, plus the Leapfrog (if and when that shows up) and the Steins' other gadgets, and the Staff of One, although like Molly's superstrength, there are ways around deploying flashy CG effects which they'd be pretty justified in taking, especially while Nico's just starting out with the staff. If they're careful, I'm hoping we can still get Old Lace at some point. Even if not necessarily in every episode.

I wouldn't be surprised if they at least tease Old Lace for a while. The occasional hint at her presence, a sinister hiss from offscreen, that sort of thing.

Also, Supergirl was able to do a pretty damn cool looking Martian Manhunter (though they use his true form sparingly, presumably for budgetary reasons), so it's not out of the realm of possibility that they could do Old Lace.

The Staff of One probably wouldn't be too difficult, though. It's just a big metal stick, and the CGI needed for the magic effects seems like it would be fairly standard stuff.

Right. The flashiest thing about the Staff is really just Nico summoning it, and they don't have to show that onscreen in full detail in every episode. A sawed-off prop, some CG glowing effects and judicious editing, that's all you need.

I wonder how they'll do the Gibborim, if they do them at all. Fifty-foot cow-god men might be a bit of a stretch for a Hulu original's budget, especially when saddled with the additional task of having them not look patently ridiculous in live action.

Depends on how outright comedic the show is, but the Gibborim looked pretty ridiculous in the comics, too. They were supposed to.

That being said, what I actually hope they do is put some guys in costumes and just greenscreen the thing.

Maybe if the show goes really well they get a budget high enough for stuff like this.

Remember the video Every Frame a Painting did a few month ago? The one about why the music in the MCU is not memorable? Well, a number of other content creator did reactions to this video. And I found all those reactions and thoughts so interesting, that I did a compilation of them, and then provided my own thoughts about the matter. The end result was a really long article, but if you are interested, you can read it here:

@Swanpride: would it be OK with you if I translate your article to Spanish? I have a friend who's doing some work on music in film and this may help her, but she doesn't know English well enough to read it on her own.

Kick ass remix of The Chain by Fleetwood Mac, one of my favorite tracks off one of the best albums mankind has ever created, Rumors, the biggest selling album of 1977?

Well played, Marvel.

Mantis took that hunk of flaming debris like a champ. I love that the noise she makes is more like someone getting punched in the stomach than getting struck by a meteorite.

Still waiting on Gamora to get some material beyond being a person who fights, but good song choice.

Gamora should get some added characterization from having Nebula around, but I do wish we could've seen some more of it in these trailers. Then again that probably wouldn't be very funny, and they do seem to be going for the comedic angle with these trailers. Which isn't a bad thing either.

@IF Wanderer Feel free to do so...just link back to my version should you publish it on the net. I'll link back.

Don't like the song (honestly, what is it with Marvel that they keep changing the songs they use for the marketing)...love the scenes they used. Still laughing about the "I tried".
