Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I'm still dumbfounded by how good that run of comics was. Not that I ever finished it.

Hawkeye's my second favorite Avenger after Cap, and I haven't even read the Fraction/Aja run yet. I'm a Hawkeye fan mainly because of Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes and Kurt Busiek's Avengers run. Clint's scene on the Raft in Civil War gives me hope that he'll get some more awesomely quintessentially Hawkeye moments in Infinity War and Untitled Avengers Sequel.

Why is Tony mentioned over Hawkeye as the MCU Avengers Team Dad on that page?

Barton might be a good dad to his kids, but I don't think he acts like much of a dad to the other Avengers. Whereas Tony's definitely a disapproving father in Civil War. Although the example on the page describes him as a godfather to the Avengers, which is a little different.

If anyone takes on the role of being the responsible one, it's Cap, but the Avengers tend to be more like squabbling kids around each other. Not sure any of them fit the trope at this point.

If anything, I'm guessing the reason Chris Hemsworth made that 'godfather of the team' comparison, it might be because RDJ is like a Team Dad for the MCU cast. I could sort of see that.

Hawkeye certainly seems to think he's the Team Dad of the Avengers, considering his reason for staying and his pep talk to Wanda.

I honestly can't remember Hawkeye having any extended interaction with any Avenger other than Natasha.

He has a few scenes with Wanda. There definitely a mentoring relationship in Ultron which continues into civil war.

Hawkeye is the mentor/daddy figure for all the female Avengers. The males prefer tough love from Fury.

Since when in he a mentor for Natasha. And none if the males look to Fury as a mentor especially not Tony

[up] I wasn't entirely serious...but I do think that Fury takes the fatherly role for Tony a couple of times. Not is a "here is my shoulder to cry on" way, but in a "yeah, you have played around enough, time to man up" way.

Yeah, Hawkeye was the guy able to give some human perspective to Wanda with his "You walk out that door, you're an Avenger" speech. Steve could have given that speech but it wouldn't quite have the same impact. But even more than Natasha he is the normal guy of the team, well trained and has some good skills but still a normal guy.

Fury does have the tough mentor attitude the Avengers need. Especially good was his scene in Iron Man 2 and his "You're Tony Stark! You're telling me you can't fix this" speech.

Hawkeye's definitely the normal guy of the team, but I think he's more like the family friend who can stand outside all of family's bullshit and call them out on it, rather than the dad they all listen to. Fury or Coulson probably could've taken on that role (Coulson's a natural for it, as we see on AOS), but they're not really around anymore.

Whew it sounds like Karolina will still be gay.

So what's the over under on "Molly Hernandez" being an Inhuman?

She can be gay without them touching on that story. Besides Xavin isn't even mentioned in the casting.

[up][up][up]She's 14, so any idea how old Molly is in the books?

I have no idea who they are, but I trust Marvel on this. I don't think they've done any flat out bad casting for any of their television series so far (excepting the dubious Iron Fist casting).

Oh wow! I'm surprised it's so true to the original run! I was expecting Victor to be on the team and for the character who ends up being the mole not to be included.

Xavin is awesome but could do with a more modern take on their gender identity.

Xavin guilt-tripping Karolina into marriage was the worst thing in the series until Whedon started writing it.

Wow. Never thought this would get off the ground although I had always hoped.

I bet Molly will be an Inhuman or nebulously defined Differently Powered Individual. I'd more wonder though about handling Karolina and Gert because of how their/their parents backgrounds fit with the Fantasy Kitchen Sink of the comics which doesn't fully square with the established MCU (who knows though because Agents of Shield has its fair share of weird stuff).

With Karolina, besides the aspect of Superman parody, I'm not sure how much set-up there is for hostile aliens living on Earth. I guess it's not too odd, especially because Guardians introduced some of the alien races.

No idea though about handling Gert's parents as time travels from an alternate universe.

Edit- Might make sense to change the parents of one of them to Asgardians.
