Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

I have the feeling that they want to tab into the CW crowd with this one...but that is kind of okay if they do it good. I mean, I have actively looked for shows which have next to no romance recently, but I actually don't mind if it is well-written. which it usually isn't. But I guess with Cloak and Dagger we can at least be sure that there won't be an abundance of love triangles....who knows, they might even explore the less romantic aspect of a co-dependent relationship...

Yeah romance is always very tricky and very easy to bungle, especially when a series features it as prominently as this one. A lot of times otherwise great stuff tends to be brought down by issues with how the romance is handled, and the premise of this show makes it rife for melodrama possibly to the point of Wangst.
It won't be the sole aspect of the show, but a terribly-written romance can drag down an otherwise perfectly good story like that in my experience.
Still, this show will bring the sum total of MCU productions about superheroes of color up to a whopping three, so there's that.
"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."It's especially crucial from a storytelling perspective that they get the romance right. Whereas with Thor which also put a lot of focus on the romance, you at least had other things like the Asgardian worldbuilding and high-flying CG action, while this is a TV show, with a lower budget, meaning they can't afford spectacle nearly as much, so they have to nail the romance because what's left probably can't hold the show up if it fails.
Romance is one of the hardest things to write properly. It requires a lot of things to go right (good dialogue, believable chemistry, both characters being compelling independently of one another, and just generally being good enough to be the main focus or lowkey enough not to become a Romantic Plot Tumor that detracts from the more interesting things).
I felt like Luke Cage was actually pretty decent at this - Luke's relationship with Reva made sense and wasn't especially melodramatic, and not only that but the show actually introduced an ambiguity and potential insincerity to their relationship (compared to Jessica Jones where Reva was shown in an unambiguously positive light) that made it a lot more interesting. His relationship with Claire develops organically and doesn't take over the plot. Same thing with Mariah and Shade
I'm not terribly familiar with Cloak and Dagger as a property, but reading the article on wikipedia I have to agree with Alley Oop that it would be really easy to botch and rife with melodrama. They're gonna need a lot of restraint.

I've been preoccupied with other events, note but I get the sense that we haven't really been hearing much news about it. That's probably why—just not a whole lot to discuss.
I imagine things will start to take off once we get a trailer.

Aw, I hoped Micah would make the cut.
