Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Doubtful. Dinklage's entire career has been based on "not playing a dwarf." Game of Thrones was an exception.

Hey it's a character who is connected to Thanos and has a pretty big role in the Infinity Gem stories including the Infinity Gauntlet.

[up][up]Even there he's not playing a fantasy dwarf, just a short person.

He's not playing a fantasy dwarf, but Tyrion is a dwarf. An actual dwarf, self-described.

I still want them to do more with Bolivar Trask, something I'd certainly never have said before they cast Peter Dinklage in the role.

Though he did play a fantasy dwarf in Chronicles of Narnia.

Dinklage is interesting, because he's one of those names who's almost certainly playing someone important. His being even looked practically confirms there's a major role in the story that we don't yet know about.

It'd be legally impossible, but Dinklage playing Galactus might be awesome.

I remember a popular theory before we knew the title of Day of Future's Past was that he'd be playing Apocalypse. There's a lot of want to see him as a cosmic bad guy.

I'd say that Galactus is probably out, not just for copyright reasons but also because the MCU's version of Dormammu is rather Galactus-like.

Also, reading about Pip the Troll on Wikipeida, I'm torn between thinking that the comic debuachery would be right up Dinklage's alley given some of his other roles, and horrified at the outright offensive premise of the character:

Pip was once Prince Gofern of the planet Laxidazia, in the Dolenz System, in the Milky Way Galaxy. He was originally an alien of the Laxidazian race who enjoyed painting pictures of the night sky. Pip became physically and psychologically mutated into a morally degenerate, stunted, satyr-like form known as a "troll" during a bout of drunkenness brought on by a mutagenic hallucinogenic ale. Like all Laxidazian trolls, Pip has four digits (including opposable thumb) on each hand, hooflike feet, and large pointed ears; apparently, normal Laxidazians are nearly identical to Earth humans. After his transformation, his people, also sick of his lewd, lecherous, and hedonistic behavior, strip him of his office and rank. He stows away on a spaceship and continues his life of debauchery.

Edit- Although presumably they would drop that aspect in the same way that Mantis is an alien and not a Dragon Lady who became a tree. Or for that matter, how Drax is an alien as well, not a mutated human.

[up] Not really.....it will be a challenge to make the look differently, but in terms of motivation those beings are nothing alike. After all, Galactus is not out for power or control, he simply wants to survive. In a way you can't really blame him for killing all those worlds, even though he naturally has to be stopped no matter what.

Plus, I really, really want to see a silver surfer origin movie...or they could fold his story into a Got G movie.

BTW, Ao S is back and they really knocked it out of the park with their first LMD episode....I don't think that anyone even missed the Ghost Rider (save for those viewers who only turned up for him in the first place).

But Elena has proofed to be a fan of cruel and unusual punishments....(I really dig Mack and Elena, those two are so much fun together...I wish we would get more Fitzsimmons, though).

Lol...it's kind of funny how they used the fitting lights on all of them during the interviews...I guess that confirms once and for all green as Iron Fists colour....

The whole thing is soooo Sailor Moon or Hogwarts Houses but still somewhat cool.

Christopher Markus apparently said Dinklage was his casting choice for M.O.D.O.K. back in 2011.

Some very, very sparse details on Sigourney Weaver's villain, Alexandra.

Looks like general fancywear to me. Qipaos have the higher collar but not necessarily with that kind of decoration and they usually cover the shoulders so it's unlikely to be that.

Bleeding Cool is speculating that Peter Dinklage could be Infinity. Which would be awesome.

Regarding the description of how the Defenders end up meeting up, I think it's very likely someone wanted them to meet up. My money is that Claire Temple, after failing to arrange a meeting between them directly, finds out that one of them is planning on investigating the gigantic hole in the ground. So she simply tips the other 3 off about the fact the giant hole in the ground is connected their current troubles. Thus resulting in all 4 of them showing up at the same place at the same time.

There is a darker possibility of course that Alexandra is playing a very complicated game that actually requires all 4 of the Defenders to work together.

I like the idea of Dinklage as an urbane, Tyrionesque Pip, as well as seeing more of the "Thanos family".

Also, not sure how it will work since Pip usually has the Space Stone and that's the Tesseract (although I see from The Other Wiki that in the comics, when separated from the Stone, Pip still absorbed it powers), but I'd like to see some instantaneous teleportation to give an idea of how powerful that Stone is. I'm imagining Pip having a conversation with someone and blipping out briefly and then returning moments later eating and drinking. And/or doing a Flash Step.
