Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Had forgotten about Taserface. I remember seeing the role when looking up other things played by the actor, who is on This Is Us. Some pretty disturbing make up in the movie that's not really reflected by the doll. Don't really know of the actor's previous roles, but what's weird is that from This Is Us, i'd never think of him as intimidating but it seems like from an image search that thanks to some minor changes in facial hair (and/or the kind of make up he has for this movie) makes him look completely different.

I'd like to see his vision, in part because if it were me, I'd want a more comedic take.

I had once suggested this trope idea of characters who are well adjusted in all respects except for having some kind of over-the-top delusion. And in these situations, it's often suggested via Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane that the character is not crazy. See for example Elwood in Harvey who is the nicest guy who you could meet and is best friends with an imaginary (?) six foot bunny rabbit.

So along these lines, you'd have Nice Jewish Boy Mark Spector and some backstory about his joining the military in an act of rebellion (and sort of behaving with a different personality during his service) and stumbling across some kind of artifact while serving in Iraq or Afghanistan. And as per the origin story, he'd have this vision of this voice telling him to turn his life around. Mark would take this artifact (I guess like an idol or something) back home with him and would hear it talking to him and would believe he'd been granted special abilities- and indeed he'd have a Charles Atlas Superpower that would be ambiguously supernatural.

And I can imagine having scenes of Mark talking with his rabbi (I know his father is supposed to be a rabbi so either his father would be his secret keeper; his father wouldn't be a rabbi in this version or he'd be talking to a different rabbi) and trying to figure out whether he was crazy and if not, whether this whole thing is sacrilegious in a world where Thor exists and you can see him on tv.

Maybe some of that, although I wouldn't want them to drop the character's dark side— being a ruthlessly violent ex-CIA mercenary who really isn't all that nice a person and maybe does have some legitimate psychological problems even if his mystic powers actually are ambiguously real. His estranged rabbi father could still be his 'secret' keeper, but then there's always that degree of uncertainty as to whether his secret is that he's Batman or Son of Sam.

I'd play that up as Moon Knight's sort of like a cross between Batman and Deadpool. Putting him in the Defenders' corner of the MCU, that could really work. Maybe on Jessica Jones— I kinda feel like those personalities would bounce off each other well.

I also really, really want them to drop a Werewolf By Night reference. Maybe leading into the Ghost Rider spinoff I'm still hoping they'll announce.

Not sure about the ruthlessly violent part. Although it did strike me now that Grosse Pointe Blank might be a good model in terms of having the character run away from a comfortable, if somewhat dysfunctional background to join the military and end up in wetwork (with a definite suggestion that they are The Sociopath to some degree), but still humorous and endearing.

Double post, but speaking of actors from This Is Us joining the MCU, Sterling K. Brown is going to be in Black Panther as someone called N’Jobu. Cool news because I love the show and he's a great actor. From a bit of searching though I don't get the sense that the character is one from the comics.

Somehow I want them to pull a Punisher and introduce Moon Knight in Jessica Jones...yeah, I know, sounds strange, but consider the combination, the heroine which deals with PTSD encountering the hero which might or might not have multiple personalities.....

Great news about Brown. He was excellent in The People vs. OJ Simpson.

Stitchkingdom has the first Thor: Ragnarok plot synopsis.

In Marvel Studios' Thor: Ragnarok, Thor is imprisoned on the other side of the universe without his mighty hammer and finds himself in a race against time to get back to Asgard to stop Ragnarok - the destruction of his homeworld and the end of Asgardian civilization - at the hands of an all-powerful new thread, the ruthless Hela. But first, he must survive a deadly gladiatorial contest that pits him against his former ally and fellow Avenger - the Incredible Hulk!

I feel like the Planet Hulk stuff is only gonna be for maybe the first third of the film, then. Kinda worried Hela might not have much screentime now.

I wonder if they allow the destruction to actually happen, leading to Loki trying to find a way to change the timeline in a future movie....

I don't ever remember N'Jobu in the comics, I imagine this is an original character for the movies?

Since no one else posted it (I think):

I really dig Thor's helmet here.

It's like he got it from The Grid or something.

The more I think about it....the Thor franchise would be the perfect candidate for a really dramatic, shocker ending. I mean, what has Marvel to loose there? It's the one which took off the least, and also the one where the main actors are not really that enthusiastic about continuing their roles.

I've heard nothing about Hemsworth not wanting to continue the role. And Thor is confirmed for Infinity War anyway.

[up][up] They already lost the love interest, Hopkins isn't really keen on playing Odin, Elba is always complaining about what he has to do and I am actually not sure about Hiddleston.

Asgard could be destroyed and I wouldn't be surprised if it is or is at least badly ravaged. I just don't see them getting rid of Thor and like I said I haven't seen anything to indicate Hemsworth is dissatisfied with the role or wants out.

They already lost the love interest, Hopkins isn't really keen on playing Odin, Elba is always complaining about what he has to do

All of those are characters the franchise could continue on without. In fact Jane being gone is something that many people are actually looking forward to the new movie over. Odin's death is something I'm actually pretty sure is gonna happen in this movie anyway.

I totally want to the Ragnarök in this movie to be at least somewhat similar to it's original myth.

[up][up] Well, I actually wouldn't kill Thor or any Avenger in any movie not having "Avengers" in the title, but I can totally see them shocking the audience and going for a real downer ending with this one...especially once you consider which stories they intend to mix together.

I actually watched the animated version of Planet Hulk, and while I suspect that it is a very abbreviated version, I was honestly surprised how bloody and dark it was at some points.

So, my Trending bar on Twitter is announcing "Sterling K. Brown joins the cast of Black Panther". Did we know that already? I ask because my only real source of Marvel Movie news is this very thread, and I can't recall everything I've read here.
