Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Jakobitis made a comment about Loeb writing for the shows.

Not everything in Ultimate Marvel was terrible. Ultimate Spider-Man wasn't so bad, at least for most of its run. And it gave us Miles Morales.

Once upon a time Jeph Loeb wrote awesome comics. Recently he's graduated into a fine executive producer. Let's just try and forget the stuff in between.

The Ultimates was pretty good too. The first one, I mean. Again, let's try and forget everything else between then and now.

Ultimate Marvel started good. Then it succumbed to poor writing and edginess, and we wound up with France-hating Captain America, cannibal Blob, abusive Hank Pym, and evil Mr. Fantastic.

Have you any dreams you'd like to sell?

[up][up]Yeah. Sometimes there are people who are great at one job but horrible at another, related one. For instance, there used to be a Marvel writer named Chuck Austen who is widely considered to be one of the worst comic writers of all time. Now he works as a producer on Steven Universe, which is amazing.

Damn, that was cruel. I am currently praying daily that there even will be a fifths season.

I want Ao S to go on at least until Infinity war. Two.

That's also the only thing anyone lied from Ultimate Marvel.

The Ultimate Universe also deserves a nod for greatly influencing the visual style of a lot of the future movies.

Chuck Austen, the guy who wrote Lois Lane as a total harpy, is a producer for Steven Universe?

Huh.

Yep. And Jeph Loeb had a pretty good run on Nova a few years ago.

It should also be pointed out that Loeb's decline in writing quality came about primarily because his teenage son died and it looked like he was getting out the pain through his writing, i.e. there was lots of death and destruction.

I wasn't going to bring it up as a point against him, but yeah. Fallen Son's issues are literally named after the Five Stages of Grief.

His Nova was good and I heard good things about Captain America: White. But those are the only two comics he's written lately — he's pretty busy being an EP for all things Marvel TV.

I'm a little confused about Captain America White. I was under the impression it was a completed work Loeb held onto it until he was in a better emotional state to release it while other places give the impression he began work on it but held off because it was too much, then resumed work on it once he was more emotionally ready. Either way it's a good work, though yes, the theme of dead son figures into it pretty heavily. Granted given who it's about Bucky would be the most appropriate character for it to happen to.

Jeph Loeb being great with the live action shows makes sense. Part of the reason he was so terrible with the animated series was because he earnestly believed kids were incapable of appreciating developed stories and characters.

Now that he's with an audience he thinks can appreciate stories, that problem's gone.

Just a heads up for those who still haven't realized the awesomeness of agents of shield:

We now have a hint that Coulson knows something about the original ghost rider (I wonder if there is already a Midnight sons show in planning), we have the Patriot in costume and we will get a nice little webseries about Slingshot to tide us over until the show is back.

Live is great.

Pardon me, but exactly what's the big deal about Spider-Man's suit having armpit webs?

I mean, I get that they were a thing in the comics and the Spectacular Spider-Man cartoon, but exactly what's their purpose and why are people gushing about it?
