Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Several weeks late, but I saw Doctor Strange. It was fun. Dug the kung fu magic fights and didn't overthink the ending.

What character would be a good fit for an Appalachian setting? I want a movie out in the mountains

[up]Red Wolf,a Bad Ass Native American vigilante from the Old West. And if that one doesn't suit your fancy, there's still 2 or 3 other RW's out there, with at least one of which still being around nowadays.

Honestly, while a Wolf as symbol for a native American hero makes sense, why does it have to be a RED wolf?

He was from the same decade that brought Black Lightning and Black Goliath. That seemed to be the popular trend at the time.

Does Marvel have any Native American superheroes whose powers aren't deliberately related to being Native American (spirit animals, connection to nature, etc)? It would be nice to see a Native American protagonist with tech-related powers or something, just to make it feel less stereotypical.

Looking at a list of them we have Moonstar(who's X-men so they can't use her), Echo, and Forge(also X-men). There's a bunch of other Native heroes but they all seem fairly stereotypical.

Took me a second to remember and had to double check he was Native American, but the X Men character Forge is a Stereotype Flip along those lines- a Native American character with technology-based powers. Although as per The Other Wiki, "He also possesses various mystical abilities such as spell casting through mystical training, though he rarely uses these. He possesses extensive knowledge of Native American magic."

One step forward, two steps back I guess.

Mmmm....let's think...there are some other "native-something" but I think this pretty much is it in terms of native americans.

Silverclaw is at least half native South American

But her powers come from being the daughter of a volcano goddess so not exactly unstereotypical

Is that any more stereotypical than people like Thor, Wonder Woman, and Hercules?

Hodor2 Since: Jan, 2015
#65214: Nov 27th 2016 at 9:43:15 AM

Kind of.

With the partial exception of Wonder Woman (who is a fictional character but tied into the Amazons of Greco-Roman mythology), those characters are characters from a real world mythology who were adapted into comic books.

Whereas she and the Native American characters are people who have powers by way of their "mystical" ancestry. Like the comparison would be if a Swedish American character had powers due to their Viking ancestry and/or because they were the child of say Thor, Odin, or Loki.

And yeah, that [down] kind of gets at the difference. It's the difference between being a Captain Ethnic and being a "mythological character".

Doctor Strange had a Native secretary who wasn't that stereotypical aside from her appearance but I don't remember if she actually ever did anything.

Alpha Flight, and/or any of the characters connected to them.

IIRC, they got a nod in Agents of SHIELD a couple seasons ago, though that's not necessarily saying much.

[up]As much as I'd love to see Alpha Flight show up, aren't they still technically X-Men characters? Of all of the Marvel Superteams, that was the one I thought would never see the light of day, on account of both being tied to the X-Men and the fact that if Fox gave a damn about them, then you think they'd have done something with them by now. But if it turns Marvel actually has the rights, I'd be ecstatic. Even a cameo would be something.

KnownUnknown Since: Jan, 2001
#65220: Nov 27th 2016 at 8:04:41 PM

...maybe?

Alpha Flight originated as X-Men characters, and admittedly the X-Men tend to be the only characters they interact with, but they've also been their own thing with their own section of the verse for a really long time. They've gone from being "part of Wolverine's Canadian backstory" to "Canada's Avengers."

I've see them as being to X-Men what the New Gods are to Superman. A group that's when you get right down to it a separate entity, but one which only ever seems to get its interaction with The 'Verse through the latter.

I expect the Fox executives wouldn't see it the same way, though.

In any case, a movie featuring an entire team of Canadians is pretty much never going to happen, considering American films even like to rewrite history to downplay our role in significant world events... Yeah, I'm whining about Argo again, sue me.
