Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

[up]Yes. But there's something "off" about the shape of his eyes and skin texture patterns.

Carnage is like the edgiest motherfucker around. I'd kinda love it.

[up][up] Good to know Ramonda will be in the film, she's always been a pretty cool character and a badass older black woman. Also it's pretty amusing that Bassett was in a movie about the real life Black Panthers.

Bassett has been my choice for the role.

Supposedly the Inhumans TV show is an addendum to and not actually replacing the feature film.

ABC also hopes that Inhumans — which is not a spinoff of the network's Agents of SHIELD and does not replace the planned feature film — will have a halo effect on the veteran Marvel drama as well. The network hopes fanboys flock to see Inhumans in theaters and follow the show to the network, bringing in new viewers who may not already be watching SHIELD (provided the latter returns for a fifth season next fall.)

Oookaay......that confuses me, but well, this sounds like Marvel wants to connect the TV shows and the movies a little bit closer through the Inhumans....

So, the Inhumans movie is still on, and the show is just connecting the movie to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D? This... actually sounds like the best possible outcome, for all involved.

I'll believe it when I see it. It sounds very suspect that they removed the movie from the release slate (especially when the rumor was Feige didn't want it) and replaced it with a TV show starring the same cast, but the latter isn't a replacement.

That sounds like a lot of PR spin, honestly.

Well, if the Hollywood reporter writes about it, one shouldn't dismiss it out hand, but I think in any case a lot will depend on how the Inhumans show is received.

I think the casting will tell us more...if they go for movie level actors, there is a better chance that they will go big with it.

Ricky Gervais as Pip the Troll and John Cena as Gladiator (Drax's rival) or Cain Marko (Scarlet Witch's arch enemy). Yay or nay?

[up] They can't use Gladiator or Cain Marko, both of characters more associated with the X-Men.

There's no way Marvel would have access to either character.

[up]Marvel's not allowed to use mutants or almost exclusively close affiliates. Maybe you have a point with Gladiator, but not only is Cain not a mutant, he's gotten involved about as often with Hulk and the Avengers as he has with the X-men, similar to Wanda and Pietro. May as well say Cyttorak himself (who has about as much affiliation with the X-men as Dormammu does) is off limits.

...Cain Marko as in Xavier's stepbrother? Already adapted (poorly) in X3: The Last Stand? Onetime honorary member of the X-Men? That Cain Marko?
