Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

The Negasonic half of that was great so it was a good deal for Fox.

It's funny because the character's so obscure that she's never really had a firm powerset beyond "vaguely telepathic". So really, that was a great deal for Marvel who got an entire character in exchange for a shrug and a Sure, Why Not?.

It was a good deal for both of them...Since Fox doesn't get anything space-related off the ground, they have no use for Ego and Marvel has no use for a minor mutant.

That's actually really nice that Marvel Studios and Fox are friendly enough to swap characters so easily.

quick backstab them and get the rights back go go go

[up] I actually have the feeling that they spend some time together, figured out who would need what for their respective universes and then did a little swapping around until everyone had what he needed.

Well so much for the movie, then.

I knew this was gonna happen. There was pretty much no other way to move forward after spending several seasons introducing the concept on another TV show instead of the movies.

Agents of SHIELD has already laid a lot of groundwork that would have otherwise been ignored by a movie.

I'm all for it.

My only regret is that Vin Deisel probably won't get to play Black Bolt.

I'm honestly kind of nervous that this might mean Agents of SHIELD might end.

That seems like a foregone conclusion at this point. The reason they moved it to a new timeslot in the first place was because of how far the ratings had fallen.

If AOS is indeed being cancelled I wonder if they'd movie Quake to the Inhumans show.

If they do, I want maybe one cameo from Coulson.

Even if she's not on the main cast, I would be surprised if they didn't have Quake in at least a minor recurring role. If for no other reason then to encourage Ao S viewers to watch the show.

Her only chance of being part of the main cast in Season 1 is if the show is being developed under the assumption that Agents of SHIELD won't get a season 5.

In some ways this is better, but I was hoping Phase 3 would end or Phase 4 would begin with a single Terrigen Bomb empowerment event that would allow for a slew of new heroes out the door immediately.

Well, that sort of already happened. Not a direct Terrigen Bomb event, but a Mass Empowering Event where Terrigen was spread throughout the ecosystem.

Don't get me wrong, I like this being a show over a movie, but I was pinning a lot of "the MCU finally acknowledges the tv universe in the films" hopes on Inhumans. Plus I thought they deserved some Silver Screen exposure, especially Black Bolt. Like, imagine if the MCU leads up to a version of the Illuminati or something?

Kind of hard to do the Illuminati with Xavier and Reed in another universe and Namor in some godawful copyright limbo, but I'd like that too.
