Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

That depends on if he's a fan.

Tony doesn't really seem like an anime guy....though he's probably travelled to Japan for business....

They would dress as each other. Because they are Disney characters. tongue
Avengers swapping costumes. (I don't know why they drew Tony's hair like that.)

I always assumed the repulsors were lethal to un-gifted, un-armored opponents - given that they launch people with enough force to make them do serious damage to stone walls

Rhodey in AOU took a repulsor shot to the chest and it flung him through a window; he was fine that same evening.

There's some kind of focusing apparatus around the repulsor. It seems pretty substantially dial-able in both directions in terms of how much force you're getting per shot.

Perhaps, but the Ultroned-Iron Legion drones were trying to kill him in that scene.

That one two-second clip baffles me so much. So Whedon clearly wanted Rhodey out of the action scene to free up space, but couldn't he have just had him stand by shooting like Hill and Nat were doing? And how is there expected to be tension in this action scene if a direct hit to the chest from the drones shows itself to do nothing?

Rhodey survived a repulsor to the chest, but Savin probably would have died or at least been rendered comatose from that repulsor to the head if he didn't have his healing factor, and that wasn't even powered by a full suit.

Age of Ultron is the most tension-free "dramatic" movie I've ever seen, which really contributes to why Pietro's death feels so cheap and unwarranted. It's just a lazy, hackneyed way to artificially raise the stakes when your protagonists have spent the last hour forty-five never facing any adversity whatsoever.

[up]I could never take Pietro death seriously because I feel it was awfully done, between having to see all the ways the avenger smash droids to Ultron saying "In retrospective" to him stealing the quinjet and mumbling.....

I dont know, it feel Joss want to have his cake and eat it too: he want to have badass scene and good win winning but also need it a death to rise the stakes so he just kill Pietro for last

Well, we always have X-Men Pietro, right?

It's kind of funny that Marvel killed off Quicksilver while Fox keep treating Wanda like every other X-Men female characters. It's like the two are twins split by a bitter divorce.

I wonder if there was ever any proper behind-the-scenes discussion about this, whether they just sort of independently decided on it, or whether it's a complete and total coincidence.

Came into this thread expecting there to be pages and pages about Doctor Strange, since it came out last week and I only saw it today. Then a quick google made me realize it doesn't come out in the US for another 2 days.

Didjurikeit? And I'm curious what kinda handwave they used if any to justify the Ancient One's whitewashing. It's probably not something that actually works, but I'm still curious anyway.

I enjoyed the film. I wouldn't say it's the best thing Marvel has ever done, but still a very enjoyable film. The effects were fantastic.

[up] Only spoilers pertaining to that specific question. I personally didn't notice it if they handwaved the Race Lift. But I'm not familiar with the source material. They did have another guy who Strange thought was TAO initially, who more closely fit what I think the comic character looks like.

Are we allowed to post spoilers for the film in this thread before the US release date? Assuming they are marked of course?

So for anyone not watching Agents of SHIELD, we now have confirmation that Johnny Blaze/a previous Ghost Rider exists.

Go ahead. That's never stopped people before, and we have a lot of Europeans in these threads anyway.

Re: Spoiler, they probably intended it as Lampshade Hanging but that sounds like rubbing salt in the wound. Damnit.

[up][up][up]The doctor Strange crowd is nice enough to stick to the Doctor Strange threat for now. So if you want to discuss the movie, you can do it best over there...I suspect fairly freely (I have avoided the threat because I won't be able to see it before Monday).

Though the Dr. Strange talk made me think of something else. Does anyone else who's both a MCU and Marvel Vs Capcom fan like to shout out the moves quotes when similar badass stuff happens on screen? Cause I'm hoping there'll be lots of moments for that in Dr. Strange.

Speaking of which, Thor totally finishes the Destroyer by somehow comboing a Mighty Tornado into a Mighty Punish. I can't watch that scene without hearing "BY ODIN'S BEARD!"

Huh, didn't know there was a separate DS thread.

[up][up]You bet I do. I'm waiting for the day "Proton Cannon" and "Final Justice" officially show up in the movie scripts. Speaking of which someone recently claimed MvC4 has begun development at Capcom. I wonder if the increased profiles of characters like the Winter Soldier, Ant-Man, and Star-Lord will get them in this time.

When Civil War came out there was a fun clip somewhere, with someone splicing the Final Justice audio with Cap and Bucky beating down Iron Man, but I lost track of it.

An actual Proton Cannon at some point in the movies would be the greatest, stupidest-circling-back-to-awesomest thing. I'd also like to see Peter Maximum Spider somebody.
