Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Maybe, maybe not. Recall that it was going to be Captain Marvel at the end, not Wanda.
Overall, it doesn't help that the only real discussion we get regarding the twins' culpability is Captain America comparing them to merely soldiers on the opposite side of a war. Which is a fitting comparison, but even war has rules like "don't attack civilians, or you go on trial for war crimes."

It did. For me at least the final battle was where the frequent It's the Same, Now It Sucks! criticisms people fling at the movie were most apparent. I felt like I'd seen this before (and better) in the first film.
I suspect Whedon felt he could make a shorter film by virtue of not needing to spend 120 minutes getting the whole team together this time, but alas.

I regret that they didn't have any scenes in tunnels or caves or whatever. The bits from Ultron Unlimited that AOU seemed to be drawing from. Avengers surrounded and Ultrons coming from every direction, out of every passage and crack.
And also that Thor did not express the need to have words with Ultron.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersAnother thing that got me is that the sequence after South Africa (and no, this isn't to do with Wanda). In any other movie, this is where the plot reaches that point where it looks like the heroes can't save the day, and then something comes along to help them save the day. But then the movie keeps going right after that because they needed it to be "MORE ACTION, MORE SCENERY, MORE LOCATIONS" and then you get another sequence like that when Black Widow is captured.
Have you any dreams you'd like to sell?
That is true. The Darkest Hour trope usually comes towards the end of the second act in stories, not towards the beginning of it.
Speaking of which, this is a good video about three act structure.

Yeah, Ao U really screwed up the three act structure.
Personally, if they wanted to fix that, then I think they should've moved the Hulk rampage to another part of the film.
Have you any dreams you'd like to sell?I swear.
Sometimes I feel like the only person who likes AOU unambiguously.
I just...don't care about the stuff that seems to piss people off. I thought it was a good movie when I watched it, and I still do now, and it's impossible for me to get why it seems to piss people off to the point where they felt the need to rip Whedon twenty new ones.
Anyway, as for Wanda....you know what? I'm done. Just toss her off a cliff. Tony too. I don't care. If we're gonna keep having these discussion seriously (as opposed to my more joking it's all Tony's fault diatribe....which isn't always a joke I admit) then I say kill them all and let Stan Lee sort them out.
That will teach all of you a lesson. All of you.
One Strip! One Strip!I mean, I've defended the film before, but that doesn't mean I like all of it. It's a flawed film that has a lot of good, but the flaws are noticeable and kind of stupid.
And yes, I'm getting incredibly annoyed by the continuing Wanda-Tony discourse as well, but I don't think that's the proper solution to it, Rob.
Have you any dreams you'd like to sell?I think what frustrated me about Ao U is that you can see a good movie in there. And for a while it is promising. And then it all kind of falls apart. I'm not sure that's just Whedon's fault, though, since Feige getting fed up with the overseeing Marvel group (Perlmutter et al) infamously happened while the film was made, and a lot of the stuff that doesn't really work seems to be the result of Executive Meddling.
Wow. Okay, I'd like to apologize. I feel like I inadvertently caused a big brouhaha that left everybody at differing levels of pissed-off, and I didn't mean to. It's just, I come here when I have a thought about this stuff because I really don't have anywhere else to talk about it.
Let's talk about something fun: for Halloween the Avengers all dress up as members of the Justice League. who wears what costume?
Meh. I was mostly joking about killing them all.
I try and solve a lot of my fiction based problems by finding a big enough fictional cliff to toss them off of.
I mean, back in the day, that was the best way to kill a dude, so it just seems fitting.
One Strip! One Strip!Tony dresses up as Rocket Red, spends the whole time imitating a terrible Russian accent. Natasha has to refrain from hitting him.
Natasha is Batman, btw.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersThe last two Captain America movies were the peak for me. The first Avengers movie was an achievement, and it deserves kudos for showing that the whole experiment of the extended MCU had been worthwhile and could pay off big, but it has the same...disconnected feel as AOU, and for that matter, Whedon's previous big-budget movie, Serenity. Great scenes and setpieces, cool action sequences and snappy dialogue, but it doesn't really flow that well. I still like Joss Whedon, but his sensibilities were honed for TV and that shows.

Don't blame yourself. It's more accurate to say you accidentally tripped over a brouhaha that's been boiling for months and occasionally flares up at the slightest provocation. A lot of people - myself included - have very strong opinions about Civil War. Which was the point of Civil War so, y'know, job well done on that.
Nobody's mad at you or anything. We're just very passionate people. ^.^
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.We could do favourite listings again...I'll start.....
Movies I consider so close to perfect that I have nitpicks at worst: The Winter Soldier, Civil War, Got G.
Movies I consider really good, though I would tweak one or two things about them: The Avengers, The First Avenger, Iron Man
Movies I which ended up uneven overall, but have enough good in them that they still get a thumbs up from me: Ant-Man, Age of Ultron, Thor (yeah, Thor made it higher on my list, the more often I see the movie the more I like it...though still mostly for Loki).
Movies which are problematic, but still fun to watch: Both Iron Man Sequels and The Dark World.
Movies I don't like: The Incredible Hulk...it's not really a bad movie, but it still bores me.
I just realized....is Doctor Strange (which btw performed beyond expectations in its first week, especially in Korea) the 13th Marvel movie? Fitting....
Edit: Oh, wait....it's number 14, Civil War was number 13...just as fitting considering what happened in the movie....

Misty Knight better get her vibranium arm this time.
The most disappointing part of Luke Cage was that Misty did not lose her arm.
You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!
