Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

I'm imagining Fisk organizing a huge prison riot in order to get at Thanos, bringing himself and the 15 best fighters in the entire United States prison system, and dogpiling Thanos all at once, and Thanos just sits there, with a look that is one part amusement, one part confusion, and one part pity, as they do absolutely nothing to him.

Reviews mostly make the same points. Incredible visuals, very trippy, 3D recommended. Also that the soundtrack is pretty good, after a lot of unmemorable ones.
Acting is spot on. Cumberbatch is excellent in the role, to the surprise of nobody. Also that Tilda Swinton is good as the Ancient One and that the character is written to be interesting and fun, which makes you think they should've just left the character damn well alone since the problem with stereotypes in the first place is that they're reductive, and the antidote to that naturally is by rounding them with good writing.note
Regarding criticisms it's what you'd expect. Mainly that the film is very formulaic and doesn't break any new ground at all, that the villain is very weak and generic, and that the (ex-)love interest is given little to work with, even if she's an entertaining character in her own right. Also that Dr. Strange's arc mirrors Tony's from the first film very closely. Many of the critics saw this as a plus or neutral but I imagine a lot of us might think otherwise.
Of course the film also has the MCU's trademark humor in it, though some reviews consider the jokes forced. There is mention of some destruction porn but I'm seeing a lack of hammering the final act for having it so far which suggests it's not going to be another instance of crashing airships. So if you you're experiencing Marvel Formula Fatigue then this movie won't do anything to fix that but if you aren't you should be fine as long as you're aware of this.

A this point the formula criticism is (quite understandably) come up for pretty much any origin movie so I can totally see where that complaint comes from. There's only so many times you can see the same basic plot before it becomes annoying.
Also raise your hand if you're unsurprised that we have yet another Generic Doomsday Villain and an underwritten love interest!
Glad they're overall positive.

Man, it's gonna be satisfying seeing Thanos finally getting arrested by some NYPD officers and carted off to prison.
You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!
