Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

[up][up] He does say MAJOR role (his emphasis), so I think the picture is a hint. That would be awesome, I had kind of convinced myself they cut her out.

Hela could have something to do with the Soul Stone.

[up][up][up] Yeah, but we've at least already met Thanos. I think it might be strange to have these bunches of characters we already know, and then have this incredibly important guy drop in who nobody has seen so far, and have him play a major role.

I am way more concerned with the question how they will flesh out Thanos than with Adam Warlock to be honest.

[up][up][up]I think Black Panther seems more likely. Not only could it cover how T'challa got his metahuman physicals (as well as his King of The Dead) status, but it falling into Killmonger's hands could result in the creation of his undead army, the Death Regiment.

[up]He's a Deviant Eternal who's mutation made him immortal and he's curious to see what dying would be like since that's the one thing he hasn't experienced yet.

[up][up] Definitely. That's a lot of CGI chin Josh Brolin will have to act against.

Not even the Infinity Gauntlet's power can compare to that of the Mad Titan's Prosthetic Chin.

@Monica, I'd have her, Carol and moonstone all develop their powers in the same event. Carol's then the protagonist because she's the military major.

The first act is top gun interrupted by first contact. The second act is Carol Karla and Monica being three bad ass super women together investigating what the flip this alien situation is. The third act is Karla selling out the earth as Carol and Monica goes Indepence Day on the Kree.

@Netflix integrating with the lager mcu. Reading the article it sounds like they want to do OT, but can't find time in their current slate to introduce these characters to effectively a new audience. Which is fair. The casual viewer may not even know who Jessica Jones is, but that becomes harder to believe as we go deeper into the information age.

We might start getting name drops soon as we're approaching films which started production after Daredevil season 1 was released.

My guess is Monica could be Carol's Black Best Friend in the first movie and get powers in a sequel, ala Rhodes.

Carol doesn't really have a large supporting cast to speak of, despite having been around so long.

[up][up] I'd just call it "Captains Marvel", then.

I think that'd be pretty cool. grin

[up] There's that one older woman...what's her name again? She died recently.

She did have a supporting cast, but most of them were created by Chris Claremont, so they're rights are with fox.

She is friends with Jessica Drew and Jones.

She's also got the Carol corps, who are her fighter jet crew.

See the thing about characterising Monica as her friend, is that in the comics,Monica rarely has the patience for Carol. They certainly respect each other though.

I'm not too knowing I'm afraid. I just know that Monica is a cynic and doesn't appreciate that Carol took her title without consulting her. I get the impression that Monica thinks that Carol puts her fingers in so many pies that she hasn't got time to be considerate?

I've not read the CWII tie in for the Ultimates yet, so I'll maybe see this elaborated on.

Some one more knowledgeable than me could probably point out I'm terribly wrong though.

[up][up][up][up][up][up] Netflix isn't everywhere yet, you know. And it is still fighting for market shares in the countries in which it launched in the last years. Of all the Marvel properties, the Netflix shows are actually the most likely to fly under the radar from an international perspective.

Anyway, I think it would be enough if the movies just acknowledge that there are now a bunch of powered people out there and perhaps put in a few cameos...it doesn't really matter if the characters do anything important, just knowing that they are present would be a nice easter egg.

And honestly, if Agents of Shield gets cancelled (which is very likely...the show really don't get enough appreciating, the numbers don't reflect the quality at all), there is no reason whatsoever to not have the characters turn up whenever there is the need to have Shield in the movies. Well, minus Coulson, naturally, that would be too confusing.

That's now how the rights work. Unless they're mutants or X-Men related they wouldn't be at Fox.

Stark and Banner weren't friends either, and look how that turned out. And Monica and Carol seem to get along just fine in the Ultimates.

If they do introduce Monica (which they absolutely should), I really hope they don't introduce her as being Carol's Black Best Friend. That would be doing a massive disservice to both her and black women in general. She should be an independent character, not a white woman's sidekick.

They were mutants though.

Carols arch enemy was Mystique for a time, and rogue to a lesser degree, having stolen Carol's move set.

Yeah it's weird to think how little love there was for banner amongst he super hero community in the 616, now that the MCU has become so iconic.

Maybe she should be Carol's Always Someone Better rival? Without the superpowers, but maybe she could have her own supporting cast in the form of...some kind of pseudo-adaptation of Nextwave.

Honestly I think if Monica were to show up it'd be good to have her command a hefty subplot in the film since Carol doesn't have substantial stories to draw from without dipping into stuff like the Immortus and CWII Dork Age.

Monica and Carol.

I think they had friendly enough interactions when they met through the Avengers.

[up][up][up][up]Just skip the teasing and make her Spectrum. Hit the ground running, I say. If MCU can skip three Ghost Riders straight to Robbie, then this shouldn't be a problem.

Y'know what, just have both Carol and Monica get abducted and experimented on by the Kree.
