Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Shuri maybe? Or Queen Divine Justice?

I know they're bringing Shuri back in the comics so I hope she gets to be a part of the MCU Black Panther cast from the getgo as opposed being retconned into T'Challa's backstory.

I liked that Earths Mightiest Heroes episode, especially that aspect of Mar-vell being involved in the stock world-conquest Evil Plan for all the right reasons, as well as that aspect mentioned of his sort of False Reassurance, which as mentioned, would work great in the MCU, since the audience already knows the Kree are bastards.

On the other hand though, that episode does relegate Carol to a Distressed Damsel role (which kind of makes sense since it's a deconstructive parody of 50's alien invasion movies), and alien abduction and probing seems even worse in that respect.

The benevolence of the Kree... That should be fun, based on what we've seen of the Kree so far.

Meh, their biggest badass, Ronan, was beaten by dancing. [lol]

Earth has nothing to worry about. cool

Ok, who let Light Yagami in here?

[up][up][up] The role is described as Serita, someone from the Wakandan community. Doesn't sound like Shuri to me, why would they try and keep her secret?

Lots of little details I'm only noticing now, like how the windows at that shot at 0:43 are all looking at completely different places. And I really do like the way the action scenes with Kaecilius look.

It's wild how female-heavy the cast has been so far. Nice to see.

Not if she rescues herself, or is simply let go. Plus its rather progressive for a female for once to be subject to Cronenberg Body Horror. I mean, how cool would it be if Carol had her entire skin quickly and effortlessly peeled back onscreen by some futuristic Kree device and somehow was kept alive and stable (albeit screaming). Then the fun with unstable, alien energy begins.....

[up][up] I want to be optimistic, but I think Lupita Nyong'o might be the one who'll get by far the most screentime, and the others might be smaller roles (I mean, technically, Civil War had eight female characters with lines, and of those three have more than one or two scenes.)

[up][up][up][up][up]It seems the author of the article updated it because now it says her role is currently unknown.

If they do the alien abduction thing with Carol, they could make into something more like, well, Alien. Or, she digs herself out of captivity by herself while avoiding the Kree only to get blown up during a firefight in the science base and she's the only survivor with powers now.

What, you think just anybody can dance like that? Earth is so screwed.

Ronan spends like half his scenes staring at people in bemused disbelief and the rest of the time just yelling. I miss that guy.

[up][up]Dude, I'm talking about bizarre, Frakenstein-like, alien surgery. I want to see Carol being literally dismembered and somehow kept alive without losing a drop of blood thanks to Kree medical/lab tech. I want to see weird techno-organic wires (or veins) tunneling throughout Carol's body while Kree scientists get ready to pump an entire reactor's worth of proto-waves into her.

I still don't like that argument against Ronan. If I was an evil alien overlord announcing my plan to annihilate all life on a planet I'd probably be stunned into inaction if one of my future victims started dancing like an idiot.

I'd rather they do the accident version. Maybe that renegade Pink Kree gives his human accomplice powers, and we get Moonstone. While he's fine-tuning Moonstone's abilities, Captain Mar-vell and Badass Normal Carol Danvers attack, the whatever device blows up, and Carol's caught in the blast.

[up]Given how closely both Moonstones' original outfits resemble Kree soldier uniforms (w/ helmet), I wouldn't be surprised if the MCU adapted her into a Kree interrogator charged with pursuing the newly empowered Danvers.

Honestly, I know next to nothing about Moonstone or her powers (besides being fairly similar to Captain Marvel's flight, strength, and energy blasts) but I do remember she worked with Baron Zemo on the Thunderbolts, right up until the point where Zemo tried to take over the world instead of raking in the cash.

[up]Yup. I'd like if they introduced her in a Captain Marvel movie as her Evil Counterpart and then put her in Thunderbolts.

I'd expect Moonstone and Carol to get their powers in the same event. But when it comes to "oh god knew invasion" Carol is going to stand and fight for the earth, but moonstone is going to try and sell us out.

I think if they're to adapt Mar-Vell in the modern day the pink Kree stuff will probably have to go. With the likely Pragmatic Adaptation changes they'll have to use for him it's probably an unnecessary detail on top of just seeming out-of-touchnote , even if it may have been intended as an Aesop on racial diversity for the white-majority readership of the time.

I'm really liking these clips of Doctor Strange and I think my dad will too since he's really into that whole chakra, spiritual, healer and power of belief concepts

The CGI definitely looks cool, but the generic skeptic-gets-converted and chosen one of destiny dialogue and Strange having what seems to be a Token Romance with Christine Palmer played dead straightnote  aren't exactly inspiring my confidence for the screenplay.

Props to Cumberbatch for what seems to be a decent Brooklyn accent though.
