Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

It's possible that Ayesha was in the cocoon.
Well, at least there's still my theory that Ayesha is in fact MCU's Adam Warlock and can turn from female to male via cocoon regen
I don't know a lot about Adam Warlock, admittedly, but this version of Peter Quill's already pretty different from the comics' version, both in personality, history, and in apparently being Ego the Living Planet's son? If anyone seems likely to have a crucifixion/rebirth arc, romance Gamora, and be an ongoing thorn in Thanos's side... Too out there? I don't even really know.
Wait, we're having a female villain? Do we know the actress?
Got G might actually beat Suicide Squad's record in terms of super powered female characters.
Elizabeth Debicki. Been known for a while from the rumor treadmill though I think it was only made official at one of the recent Comic-Cons.
If they're combining Ayesha with Adam Warlock it's possible the character is a hermaphroditic entity like Desire from The Sandman, or can shift between the forms like comics Loki. In the case that it's a Composite Character situation, I figure Ayesha is a more fantastical sounding name than Adam Warlock.
I wouldn't be surprised if Starlord - being the Ascended Fanboy he is - is the one who comes up with the name for him. Maybe there's an in-universe fantasy series Quill loved as a kid featuring some hero with the title/occupation of "warlock" and his new ally shares similarities (especially power-wise) with that character.

It just occured to me. In order to differentiate him from Vision, what if they turned Adam Warlock into a bigoted asshat whose usual noble attributes and Friend to All Living Things disposition became his Hidden Depths? It'd be similar to what they did with Yondu.

So the first reviews of Dr. Strange are out, and most of them are positive. As expected the best praise goes towards the visuals and Cumberbatch's acting (which I don't think was ever really in question). Most common complaints seem to be it's formulaic and some of the humor is forced. So more of the same, and most likely going to end up in the middle of MCU rankings.
Probably the main difference between it and Ant-Man is Doctor Strange seems to prioritize action scenes while the latter prioritized the humor and silliness. For me and a lot of people the humor, plus the performances of Paul Rudd and Michael Pena, are what made Ant-Man really work. Whereas Doctor Strange seems to be leaning back on different things, none of which have really appealed to me so far.

Well, if the story is decent I am happy...I don't have high expectations on the script. Which would usually be a deal breaker, but those visuals and the actors are a strong argument.
Though there are no reviews collected at Rotten Tomatoes yet, so far we only have first impressions. Can't wait for more analytical takes on the movie.

I'm personally excited about Doctor Strange. Surprisingly, Marvel is always able to make these origin movies worthwhile by how different they are from each other.
and holy hell i am so fuckin' psyched for guardians of the galaxy vol. 2, especially after the first one ended up as my favorite movie of all time
"If you spend all your heart / On something that has died / You are not alive and that can't be a life"It's also opposed by shipping fatigue and by general agitation over having the one female protagonist happen to be the white guy's love interest - and the debate over whether or not that undermines her role as the most dangerous woman in the galaxy due to the movie spending more screentime on "totes f*ckable" than on Gamora being awesome.
There's a lot of reasons people oppose Quill/Gamora that, unlike how it usually plays out, have nothing to do with a rival ship. Even people who believe they did have chemistry can still hate the ship.
