Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Taika Waiti is doing a Reddit AMA if anyone has questions.

Nothing in the way of plot related spoilers but he did reveal a lot interesting tidbits.

  • Marvel gave Waititi a lot of creative freedom on the characters, tone and actual style of the film, even if the studio obviously mandated a lot of the plot for the sake of Infinity War. It's gonna feel like a Taika Waititi movie in the same way Iron Man 3 is very obviously a Shane Black movie and Guardians of the Galaxy is very obviously a James Gunn movie.

  • He's basically starting fresh and is focusing on making it a strong individual work and not just a sequel or lead-in to IW, to the point that he said he's more or less ignored the first two Thor movies and Infinity War, leaving all that stuff up to Marvel. It's going to be completely different from the first two movies.

  • He's a big fan of Jason Aaron's Thor run.

  • The movie is very "crazy" and is probably one of the most different and "adventurous" Marvel movies that's been done, whatever that means.

  • Valkyrie has a "decent sized part" so I'm guessing something like Black Panther in Civil War in terms of screentime.

  • Bruce Banner is apparently gonna steal the show and be one of the big highlights of the movie.

  • They're going with a really unique and crazy score, and it sounds like Waiti himself agreed with the recent video about how most of Marvel's movies have really generic, bland music.

  • Perhaps most interestingly, he said he's aware of the perception that Thor is apparently a boring character, and says a lot of work went into making sure that his storyline in the movie is really interesting and that he actually gets to do some awesome shit, as opposed to just being overshadowed by Loki.

While everything else instills me with hope, I dread that Hulk will steal Thor's thunder. Pun maybe intended.

I'd just like to say that I totally called both the Hulk being the second most important character in the movie, second only to Thor, and Hulk's storyline basically being a condensed adaptation of Planet Hulk.

The more I hear about Thor and Doctor Strange, the less excited I feel about them. Doesn't help that I actually like the first Thor movie.

The more I hear about Thor Ragnarok the more I want to see it, but I'm as ambivalent towards Doctor Strange as I was when Cumberbatch was still announced.

I wasn't especially looking forward to a new Thor movie, but the talent involved and everything I've heard so far has me excited.

I liked the first Thor movie too, but hearing that Marvel actually gives a shit about Thor now after the snoozefest that was The Dark World has easily made Thor Ragnarok my most looked forward to movie in Phase 3.

Hemsworth can act. It's just that none of the Marvel movies he's been in have really given him a chance to because of writing issues for the character. The change in setting is a great opportunity to rectify this.

I said it before but they really should have either not resurrected Coulson, or had his resurrection happen in the movies. It might've made integration easier.
Neither one would have made any sense, though. Coulson was the best character to be the lead in Agents of SHIELD and resurrecting him in a movie would just be out of place. He's never been a main character in a movie at all, only a minor character.

I know fans are always like "Why don't the Avengers know that Coulson is alive?" And I'm like "Why would they need to? What would be the point?" There is literally no reason why any of them would need to know Coulson is alive.

I had a thing all typed out detailing why each of the Avengers would need to know Coulson's alive (him having to deal with Loki alone because they couldn't get their collective shit together before then foremost among them), but I realized those admittedly emotional reasons might not count as needs. So how about this: let's assume Ultron and Sokovia still happened. It leads into Civil War. Now, Tony and Steve are terrible at dealing with bureaucracy. And that's what the Accords ultimately are; a lot of bureaucracy. Coulson presumably has a lot of experience with bureaucracy and bureaucrats. If the Avengers had known he was alive, maybe -just maybe- one of them would have reached out to him for help. And he could have stepped in as a liaison and helped hammer out a compromise that would have worked for the Avengers and the UN. Which means the team would've been unified when Zemo started his plan. And while he still would've caused some problems for them, I doubt it would've ended with three 'legal' Avengers who wouldn't be doing any Avenging anytime soon (one because he's too injured, and the others because Ross isn't likely to trust either of them anytime soon) and all the others scattered and living in hiding.

Also the first time I find myself interested in a Thor movie, though my reasons for ignoring them before were admittedly the genre - which still won't have changed I guess - and Loki, whom I hated with the fire of a thousand burning nuns in The Avengers. I think Hemsworth makes Thor quite likable, and if he gets actually good writing, I'm certainly not complaining. Bruce I can manage as long as he doesn't wallow in manpain.

I'm also looking very much forward to Tessa Thompson, whom I've last seen in Veronica Mars.

[up] But the whole point of Civil War is to have the Avengers split up. You can't put someone in who is good at bureaucracy or turns Tony's and Steve's heads straight. Thus no Fury.

Waititi basically addressed most of my problems with Thor 1 so I'm looking forward to Ragnarok to see how he handles it.

Neither one would have made any sense, though

I really don't care. The point is if they ever wanted actually have SHIELD interact with the movies again, they already wrote themselves into a corner by having Coulson's resurrection happen in the show. The entire "Everything's connected" meme was ill-conceived from the start.

That's basically a good argument for him being kept out of the movies then. There's really no drama in that scenario.

Why did they write themselves into a corner? Shield has a lot of secrets, that is basically in the job description.

I think the ideal solution would be to show members from the cast in the crowd shots from Winter Soldier and Age of Ultron. Unfortunately they didn't do that. Most likely for scheduling reasons.

edit: I will be a bit disappointed if Spider-Man doesn't reference some of the other heroes in New York though. Mentioning the "Devil of Hell's Kitchen" and "the bulletproof guy" would be nice.
