Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Heh. 'Enter.'

I guarantee you that fanfic already exists. It existed from the moment RDJ was in both Iron Man and Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes and the BBC Cumberbatch Sherlock was a thing. I'll bet if you looked you could find a crossover with Elementary, too.

Be warned. The details for Strange's stingers are up online and they both sound AWESOME.

So Tina Minoru who showed up in the comics makes an appearance in the proper film too. No idea if she's necessarily going to be in the Runaways show or is still meant to be Nico's mother, especially since she doesn't look old enough to be the mother of a teenager.

Likewise Kobna Holdbrook-Smith is Jericho Drumm aka Brother Voodoo. No idea if he'll make another appearance in the Black Panther solo film, but it's cool that we've got another Shakespearian actor in the fold.

The fact that they can't name her may have something to do with the animosity between the Film and TV divisions, but if she does show up on the TV show then that would settle doubters' thoughts about whether the television shows are canon for good.

Nick Fury has appeared on Agents of SHIELD twice, as has Maria Hill and Lady Sif, but that still hasn't made some people believe the shows are canon.

Tina Minoru wouldn't be a teenager's mother at the start of Strange's training. Linda Louise Duan could pass for having an elementary-aged daughter.

...Maybe. She does still seem a bit young.

I still have the hope that they cast Sigourney Weaver with the idea in mind that she is a movie-level actress who could easily have another evil turn on the big screen.

When does Runaways come out? Feige officially said that Stephen Strange hasn't begun training yet at the time of TWS, and even assuming the movie happens the day after, and Runaways happens in 2018, that's unlikely for Nico to have gotten that old. Unless Tina has access to some sort of delayed aging powers.

That may be overthinking things. It could be as simple as Tina not being named onscreen because she doesn't have a lot of dialogue. Note he doesn't say they can't name her onscreen, they said she simply isn't named onscreen.

As for the age question, Hollywood casts younger women as parts that should logically be going to older women all the time so that also might be overthinking things.

I don't think a drug trip was a good fit for Cassaday's art style, but I still like the concept of reality (already fictional here) being nothing but information, stored and generated on a cosmic or microcosmic scale, hackable if you can 'read' it. That 'cheat codes for the world' idea.

In the comics it doesn't take long for Strange to become uber even though he only had less than five years of training as the SS. Yeah it makes more sense for an outsider who never had enough training to not be the best. He can't perform classic Strange feats off the back. Doesn't make sense even if the next film he's in fhere's Thanos.

So the first credit scene is an official teaser clip for ______ like CW in AM?

Btw Moon Knight is yea happening like fans speculated. No doubt Blade will be next...

I just did a quick google news search and there's nothing about Moon Knight other than an editorial about why he should be the next Netflix hero.

Personally, I think that if they introduce Moon Knight, they should have him show up in Iron Fist. Maybe have Danny Rand at some gala or whatever and he meets Marc Spector in his Steven Grant guise.

Moon Knight would be an interesting one for them to try and deal with. There's how they decide to play with the whole 'multiple identities' idea (and the reality or otherwise of Khonshu) and the fact that MK would be really, really violent. Like, Daredevil level brutal fights but with razor sharp knives/projectiles in the mix. They haven't sheered away from bloodshed and the reality of street vigilantism but you need some good writing to keep the guy sympathetic.

[up][up][up]Oh you're right. Fucking screenrant made it sound official when they said "the Iron Fist trailer unveiled at New York Comic-Con makes it plain that the streaming service’s take on the Marvel universe is ready to add this character to its line-up." the headline was bait and click then.

[up]you just create a 3D character. someone fully realized so theres not just not one side to them. empathy is more important than sympathy. if we can understand him inside and out then thats enough.

Agreed that is what they should do with MK, but easier said than done. He's like if Batman took on the Punisher's mission, but with extra psychoses on the side. He's a filthy rich mercenary who goes around beating up (normally poor) criminals because he has voices in his head. It can be done but playing with all those is going to be an interesting prospect, if it ever happens.

It seemed like more of a setup to me. Basically, they can have Ragnarok start with Thor either knowing where Odin and Loki are, or have all three be already back in Asgard, and just need a couple of sentences to explain that Strange helped Thor find them.
