Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Which is all the more astounding that they chose to introduce the characters in a manner that guaranteed people would call them out as being Diet X-Men, complete with Daisy's mom being Not!Magneto.
Forest Whitaker joins Black Panther

Florence Kasumba will reprise her role from Civil War as Ayo and Daniel Kaluuya will play W'Kabi.

And they confirmed that M'Baku will be "the leader of a rival tribe." Interesting.
Also, Ayo is one of Marvel's LGBT characters so hopefully that is reflected! They say Whitaker is playing Zuri, which is odd since the character is usually comic relief. I don't know if I've ever seen Whitaker do comedy.

This movie is getting together one hell of a cast, and I approve.
Yeah, I'm really glad to hear that Kasumba's going to be reprising her role. Hopefully she'll be given more to do here, considering the Ensemble Dark Horse status she attained with one line in Civil War.

"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."That's cool she's coming back and getting a name. I wonder if Aneka is also going to show up. The Midnight Angels rebellion would make for a nice plot down the line.
Super glad to hear Zuri is being kept because he was a lot of fun but I figured they would've gone for someone more imposing looking for the Boisterous Bruiser character than Whitaker. I always envisioned someone more along the lines of Michael Jai White.
And I'm pretty sure W'Kabi has a metal arm of his own so depending on people's WMG of what might happen to Bucky there we might nevertheless get an idea of what his replacement arm might look like.

Nope. They didn't even say who he was when he was first cast. Later on they said it was a bit part that'd expand in future movies (pretty much confirming yes, he will be in BP) but they never specified which movies.
Using the Avengers' Wolverine Publicity to promote lesser-known heroes seems to be Marvel's go-to move after Ant-Man. Clever.
But Ross is a Black Panther character, so that's most likely where he will show up. And there is no way there won't be white people in the movie, and they've never claimed anything else - they simply said that the majority of characters will be black (which so far seems to be the case). I suspect it's part of the reason why he hasn't been confirmed yet - the other might simply be that the castings we're hearing are mostly new characters, except for Ayo.
(I admit that part of my surprise at people being incensed at Bucky possibly showing up in the movie is the fact that Ross pretty much will show up. And while Sebastian Stan may be adorable and have quite a tumblr following, Martin Freeman is a well-known movie star, who seems much more likely to be inserted just for the sake of his popularity.)

I'm interested in the fact that they've confirmed Florence Kasumba is playing Ayo, since she is a relatively new character (her first named appearance was in the first issue of the most recent Black Panther run by Ta-Nahesi Coates) and she's also most commonly associated with fellow Dora Milage Aneka, since they are in love. I wonder if the movie will explore that
It's interesting because they both pretty much started production at the same time — although for the movie, pre-production goes much slower than for the comic book, so the movie can definitely be influenced by the comic.
But yeah, it does seem like Coogler's Black Panther will be some sort of combination between Priest's run and the current Coates' run, considering the secondary characters that they have confirmed and the tone they say they are going for (Priest's run was a lot less of a political commentary and a lot more action/comedy, while Coates is straight up going for a political thriller).

The argument is pretty much semantics in this case because there is really not any noticeable difference in the popularity gap between a C or D or E lister. Once you get past a very select few group of characters known to the public (which admittedly has grown quite a bit thanks to the success of the MCU movies) most Marvel characters are pretty much unknowns.
The only area where obscurity really factors in is if there's enough published material featuring them to give a springboard for a movie, and even then that's assuming the movie is ABOUT them (I don't think anyone here is expecting Silver Claw or Howard the Duck to headline their movies) and not an ensemble film.
