Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

True. Hmm, how about Sam Alexander? He's the current Nova, and he'd probably be able to lead a movie. But then again he is a legacy hero, so would the MCU have to introduce Richard Rider first? (I don't know much about Nova.)
'd. And YES, America Chavez would be awesome to have on the big screen!

When we're done, there won't be anything left.Sam doesn't really have a direct legacy connection to Rider though.
He's not the same kind of legacy character that you need to establish the legacy first. Hell, the fact that comic book Novas aren't a thing might work in his favor. Find a helmet from an ancient Nova initiative or whatever and he'd be the only one.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersI don't know, they're already skipping both Mar-Vell and Monica Rambeaunote to get to Carol, I think they can skip whoever the previous Novas were to get to Sam easily enough.
Partially
'd.
But yeah, America Chavez is always the first one who comes to mind for me when it comes to Latinx superheroes in the MCU.

"We'll take the next chance, and the next, until we win, or the chances are spent."Richard was dead way before Sam got the helmet and he's only important to his story insomuch as people will occasionally tell him how much better the "other" Nova was to insult him.
And of course if they can make a Carol Danvers movie without first making a Mar-Vell one then it really isn't that big a deal.

I've always liked Silverclaw but I'm not sure if her more comic booky powers suit the tone the MCU sticks with.
I'd love to see her in animation though.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersNova is obscure enough that they can pick any incarnation of him they want...which one is the most popular? Because that's what they would most likely go with...either that or create a composite character out of all the "favourites"....
Just because James Gunn doesn't want to use Nova it doesn't mean that he can't be in the MCU.
A character doesn't have to be well known to get put in the movies.
Although she is even obscure by that standard. Aside from Busiek's Avengers run, I think the most significant appearance she's had was as registration fodder during Civil War. And then she left the US because Carol Danvers beat her up and threw her into an interdimensional gulag.
Still though. Mantis was obscure. I can hope, I can dream.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersHer entry in the Marvel Database ends at Avengers Disassembled so, yeah, she hasn't been around for a while.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.![]()
I added an entry in the Hilarious in Hindsight section because there was an old issue of the Avengers where someone even mockingly brought up Mantis as an example of a Z-lister that nobody remembered or gave a shit about. The MCU kinda makes the concept of character notoriety irrelevant.

I notice that that's a thing. Not creator's pet necessarily but characters that it seems nobody but their creator has interest in. Silverclaw and Triathlon were unceremoniously dropped from Avengers after Busiek. Monica Rambeau feels that way too, with her being depowered and quitting the team shortly after Stern stopped writing the book.
Characters that just drop off into limbo when the creative staff changes.
I'll fight the person who said that.

Forever liveblogging the AvengersWell, kind of, but you still need something to make you stand out enough in order to allow you to get put into a movie ahead of other characters...the Got G are kind of a special case. And I'll be honest here: I don't think that we would have gotten them ahead of the Fantastic 4 and Silver Surfer if Marvel had the rights. Just being a badass with some abilities is not enough, the character has to cover new ground somehow.
We definitely wouldn't have gotten them ahead of the Fantastic Four. If Marvel had all the rights, X-Men, Spider-Man, and FF would have started the MCU. They're the A-List.
Marvel Studios had to take a chance on its B-List with Iron Man and when that worked out really well they started pushing the Avengers franchise. Then they took another chance on their C-List with Guardians, it was awesome, and suddenly the likes of Dr. Strange, Black Panther, and the Inhumans are getting greenlit.
Now they just need a successful D-List movie like, say, Howard the Duck to open that door and then the sky's the limit for the MCU.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub. What new ground exactly, did say, the Guardians break?
Hell, Captain America, Hulk and Spider-Man had their movies before the MCU.

But yeah, she is all kinds of awesome!!!! Hopefully she will be all over the MCU TV side....
