Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Agreed. There are plenty of people who would be willing to discuss those subjects, but complaining that we're discussing the MCU's racial issues (which is an important topic to many people) won't do you any favors.
Oh God! Natural light!I mean, I'm a fan of Berserk. I'm the last person to get on somebody for them liking something that's "problematic"
.
I don't think anybody really cares that much if people enjoy Iron Fist or anything.
I certainly won't shame anyone for liking it. I plan on watching it myself so I can form my own opinion.
But there are some problems inherent in the premise, and I think those deserve to be talked about.
I've never seen Berserk. How is it problematic?

Oh God! Natural light! To be fair to Ant Man, the treatment of Hope was at least partially a symptom of the previous Edgar Wright script (where she had even less of a role then this version).
And we all know she's going to kick all our asses in the sequel....probably Tony Stark's ass too.
One Strip! One Strip!I am still, quite frankly, stunned that Wright wanted an Ant-Man film, and not only didn't want the Wasp in it, but made it so that Janet was dead without even a cursory appearance.
I mean, seriously.
Oh God! Natural light!Sent you a PM since I didn't want to clog up the thread.
Also I haven't ever seen any of Edgar Wright's movies but everything I've read about the subject seems to indicate he might not have actually been the best person for that particular job. I'm not necessarily going to lambast him for his movies not being super inclusive towards women (although that's a fair criticism), but I would not have put him on Ant-Man.
(In fact, that's pretty much what Daredevil reminds me of: Angel. Especially the vicious circle, the fact that no matter how many wins Angel gets, he still loses. The Senior Partners are even worse than Fisk, actually, because you can't kill them. They don't exist despite humanity, they exist because of humanity.)
Angel was fighting the abstract concept of evil itself. Dare Devil is fighting a mortal human man. The Kingpin is not an eternal force of nature intrinsically bound with the very concept of free will.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.![]()
Yes, that is a problem with him. Hot Fuzz, probably my favorite film of his that I've seen, is probably the worst, with no major female characters, and the only heroic one is the one who basically does nothing but make sex jokes. (Most of the villainous ones are all gun-toting older women, though, so there is that.)

Oh God! Natural light!I like the Cornetto Trilogy, but there aren't many female characters, being mostly about male friendships and maturity, boys becoming men, or not. I don't know if any of them would pass the Bechdel Test. Hot Fuzz was originally going to have a love interest, but she was written out when they realized it would be funnier to just give the same lines to Simon Pegg's Buddy Cop.

I'm gonna be honest, I... really can't comment on any of the Netflix shows, because I haven't watched them, because darkness is NOT my cup of tea.
But you know what kind of spinoff show I'd like to see? D- and C- listers, or otherwise lighthearted characters, in a sitcom setting.
- Random Civilian: Oh no! The Grappler is robbing a place!
- Squirrel Girl: You want to take this one, Gwenpool, or should I?
- Gwenpool: Hang on, let me check the script... Okay, yeah, my only appearances in this episode are quips and... I have one more meta joke to get in. Huh, wonder if my actress started charging more...?

People DO discuss those things, too. You're more than free to broach those subjects yourself, if you like, but just try to keep in mind most people have good reason to care about those things even if they aren't as personally important to you.
