Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Because he's a hilarious man. It's in the outtakes on the DVD. Joss walks on set during the filming crying, "EVERYBODY STOP FIGHTING!!!"
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.See, I don't think Loki was improvising much in Thor, mainly because Hiddleston's performance gave me the impression that he knew all along about his Ice Giant heritage, so revealing that he knew to Odin when he did, and in the way he did, was a deliberate attempt to trigger the Odinsleep, getting pops out of the way so he would be free to have the Ice Giants attack Asgard, giving him a pretext for wiping them out.
I finished up to episode 12.
I'm not sure which is funnier: Claire stomping on Shades' shades, Zip walking in wearing sunglasses pretending to be Shades and getting yelled at, or Shades killing Zip then taking the sunglasses as a trophy.
That or Luke sealing Turk into a dumpster, but that's unrelated.
You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique! You know who I just realized he reminds me of?
Shades: How can I help you, King StokesStokesStokes?
Cottonmouth: I need a gun that can clobbah dat dere Cage!
Shades: That's what we do best here at Diamondback Arms!
Zip: You better get it with a money-back guarantee!

You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!I never got that impression. Right before his argument with Odin, we see him experimenting with the Casket of Eternal Winters - turning his skin blue to see what the Frost Giant contact had shown him before. And when he flips out on Odin, it's so full of raw emotion that it's impossible for me to take it as anything but genuine.
Sure, you could argue that he as faking every emotion, but his shocked behavior upon learning he's a Frost Giant and that he takes his own initiative to confirm the truth before screaming at Odin over it communicates pretty well that this is a brand new discovery for him. Loki never comes off as a devious mastermind who is in control of every little thing.
Similarly, he constantly makes mistakes. He leaves Heimdall in charge of the Bifrost because it just doesn't occur to him that he might betray him. Why does he do this? Because he trusts Heimdall. End of the day, he's doing what he thinks is best for Asgard and he thinks his friends and colleagues will support him.
He's also entirely content with Thor's banishment. He doesn't want Thor returning because he's afraid Thor's claim to the throne will supercede his and get in the way, but he doesn't seem to have any particular malice towards his brother either. He only sends the Destroyer after him once his mom points out that the banishment was totally a Secret Test of Character and Thor's going to be home before y'know it.
And even then, he hesitates to actually kill Thor when the opportunity is presented. After Thor makes his impassioned plea, Loki turns the Destroyer around to bring it home. It's a last-second impulse that makes him go, "No, I really need to stop this here," resulting in the Destroyer whirling back around and backhanding Thor.
Nothing about his behavior screams "Devious evil mastermind in complete control of all circumstances who has carefully calculated every aspect of the plot and manipulated all players in accordance with the grand design." Loki's cunning and builds his plan on the move, but I don't believe for a second that the Loki who secretly released Jotuns into Odin's Vault was already plotting the annihilation of their planet.
He only came up with destroying Jotunheim out of desperation after learning the truth, because he believed his father could never truly love him as a Jotun. In the end, it was never even about the throne of Asgard. It was about proving that he was as worthy a son as Thor - a motive nakedly shown when he tries to lift Mjolnir just before departing Midgard.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Loki is the god of Lies, not the god of cunning...that isn't exactly the same. Loki's downfall is that he constantly hides his true persona from the world, he even lies to himself. He honestly believes in The Avengers that Thor pushed him down the bifrost, but we all know that this isn't what happened.
Yes, the human capacity for selective memory and interpretive self-delusion is rather impressive, and Loki's is definitely just as well developed if not moreso.
