Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

I understand why some have reservations about the Man-Ape, but I think they're being a little overly cautious. I didn't even notice the Unfortunate Implications until people started talking about it. I highly doubt we'll see a man dressed like a gorilla as a villain in the MCU anyway, so the point is probably moot.

Make mine Marvel.Grodd and Gorilla City, the Ultra-Humanite, Monsieur Mallah... DC actually has a *lot* of intelligent gorillas, for some reason.
I guess there's this: ...whatever this is.
Yeah. Marvel's intelligent super-gorilla is a hero because Marvel isn't speciesist like DC.
I think I read somewhere once that the reason why DC has so many Gorilla characters is because there was once an issue with a gorilla on the cover which sold exceptionally well (nope, I am not making that one up).
Considering that Disney is STILL getting flak for King Louie because too many people assume he is named after Louis Armstrong when he in fact was voiced by Louis Prima, the king of Swing (exactly because Disney was well aware of the potential unfortunate implication if they pick a black voice actor in this case), I see a giant landmine there....a good thing that Marvel picked a director which has proven in the past to be able to handle such subjects and can hardly be accused of racism.
The thing about Man-Ape is his tribe culture. The Jabari tribe live in the outskirts of Wakanda called Crystal Forest, where trees glossen like glass and the weather always freezes. There are gorillas there, which they worship. The head gorilla figure , simply called Gorilla God, is always at odds with Bast. If Wakandas are in full control of the land then they would try their best to renounce the Gorilla God. Panther worshipers hence are portrayed as fundamentalists. This tension between the two tribes is powerful. How M‘Baku fits into all of this will take more time for me to explain, nonetheless he does have his own society he helms from that is conflicted with how pro Panthers live. Yes the fact M‘Baku, a black man, dresses as an ape and worships one sounds racist though it's only because Roy Thomas tried to make him equally as nunanced as the rest of Wakanda's history. Associating black people with ape anything is wrong. Giving M'Baku his own history to pull from for motivation is right. So... the challenge remains. How to do the same in live action without blacks being ape fanatics.
Perhaps the Jabari hate outsiders. Que Bucky and Steve. His anger is unleashed upon the sole person responsible.

Given the order of the casting announcements, and the fact that Michael B. Jordan is a more well-known actor, I'm reasonably sure Killmonger will be the main villain (or one of the main villains), with M'Baku playing more of a supporting role, which likely means his background will not be as elaborate as it is in the comics (especially if he will be a more important character in later installments, where it could be revealed in a more in-depth way).
I'm sure that Bucky being in Wakanda will raise the ire of T'Challa's enemies somehow. Steve is not in Wakanda I think, given that he warned T'Challa that "they" would come for "him" (that is, Bucky) and not "us".

But he's still gonna give Flash some trouble later. And he knows his identity.
Not even the Punisher could save that.
One Strip! One Strip!I'm rather annoyed at myself that I didn't notice he was Dogpound and Odin.
I'm ashamed of myself.
One Strip! One Strip!

I guess I was referring to the DC ones, yeah. I can't think of any actual Marvel gorilla supervillains.
